An alternative to Studio-Notifications

Heya there!

We all receive those notifications:

Some of us don't like them. Furthermore, they are unprecise.

So instead of having studios notifications every day, we could add a new tab in the “My Stuff” section:

And by clicking on it, we could see every studio in where there was new activity since our last visit:

PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS POST, AND THE ONES I MADE BELOW, WERE MADE BACK WHEN I WAS NOT A SCRATCH TEAM MEMBER.

No support.

I don't see a point in removing studio activity notifications entirely. Sometimes I like them to see what's going on in my various studios. This suggestion just makes me need to check more than one page for notifications.

There are studios of mine that barely get updated, so if there's activity, I'd like to see it as soon as possible, possibly via a daily notification system (like what we have now). I'm not sure how often I'd check a “studio activity” tab, for a notification serves as a reminder to me. The only way I could support your suggestion is if I also got a notification for studio activity — but that defeats the purpose of your suggestion.

If you don't want to receive notifications for this, don't curate a studio. Simple as that.

It's from where you can create or edit your projects and studios. So by clicking on “my stuff” you can directly see if there are new activity in studios.

And last but not least, if you're too lazy to check ONE page just ONE time a day, it's maybe that you don't really care about what's going on in your studios.

And i don't get why thousands of scratchers should be annoyed because a few others are too lazy to check their “my stuff” once a day.

Sorry for saying it like that but, usually you make constructive and thinked comments. But this time, it's seems that your only argument is saying that you're lazy .__.

If the suggestion for opting out of studio notifications is rejected, I would support this, otherwise no - I prefer that one.

This would be very beneficial. Instead of getting some notifications at the end of each day, you would directly see what's going on in your “mystuff” page and it would be more accurate too. Instead of receiving notifications each time there was an activity, the amount of activity there was in a studio would just pile up until you check that studio. Personally, I like receiving studio notifications, because I find them useful and I like to know when something happened in some of the studios I curate. This alternative would keep this system, but it would be formatted in a different way.
Also, although this removes studio notifications, it's not completely a rejected suggestion - since they are somewhat kept in a different manner.
I don't think the Scratch Team would implement this right away though, seeing as they have priorities and studio activity might not be the thing they'd like to deal with the most. Scratch is after all a programming language and they probably have other things to do than this, but I would greatly appreciate it if this was added one day nonetheless.

For someone like me who doesn't mind Studio Notifications, this wouldn't have the ease of just receiving a notification. If this was something that was optional, I wouldn't mind this being implemented.

Hmm…now that's a constructive rebuttal. Nice work. But I have a few problems with this. (Be prepared for a long read, sorry.)

bidulule wrote:

Where do you see this? I don't see on the Statistics page something about “number of Scratchers who dislike studio messages.” It's like the movement against Scratch 3.0 — those who disliked it were more vocal about it. As a result, it appeared that most Scratchers hated 3.0, which was certainly not the case. Plenty of Scratchers like me (and from the looks of it, you as well) are very optimistic about Scratch 3.0, despite its problems. Why not share a similar viewpoint on studio notifications?

Unfortunately there is no quantifiable data that shows the number of Scratchers who dislike studio messages. Until such data is released, I'm not sure that saying “most of scratchers don't want this reminder” would be completely correct.

bidulule wrote:

I missed this the first time around. Looking at your images, I really like how it shows exactly how many new projects and new comments there are. Keep in mind that there's more studio activity than this (e.g. inviting and promoting curators/managers), but I suppose that can be seen through the standard activity page in the studio — you're not suggesting to get rid of that, right?

bidulule wrote:

Eh…I'm not so sure about that one. A lot of times I go on Scratch to help out on forums, studios, and Scratch Team members' profiles. I know I'm going to be in the huge minority for saying this, but I don't go to “My Stuff” every day. In contrast, I do go to the notifications every day, and I'm sure everyone does. This is a surefire way for me and for others to see if there was any studio activity.

I'd be surprised if there was someone who doesn't check their new notifications every time they go on Scratch.

bidulule wrote:

Couldn't this argument be reflected back to you? In my case, the ONE page I need to check would be the notifications page — simple. There's one thing that the current system and your idea have in common — you still can't really see what exactly the activity is. I do see that your idea shows a little more about what the activity is, but it still requires you to go to the studio itself to see what comments or projects were added.

I also don't think the “lazy” argument works for your side, and in restrospect, it doesn't work for me, either. You're right, I suppose most Scratchers go onto “My Stuff” every day. I can't call you lazy for not checking studio activity through messages, but you also can't call ME lazy for not checking “My Stuff”. In my eyes, they're both the same amount of work, to be honest.

bidulule wrote:

And i don't get why thousands of scratchers should be annoyed because a few others are too lazy to check their “my stuff” once a day.
I also don't get why a helpful notification system should be removed just because a few others are too lazy to check their studios when notifications appear. Honestly, I don't think this argument solves anything for either side. Keep in mind that there are probably thousands of Scratchers who like the studio notifications — but as I said above, there is no quantifiable data for either side.

There are benefits and downsides to the notification system. There are benefits and downsides to the “My Stuff” system.

bidulule wrote:

I really appreciate that you say that I make constructive and well thought-out comments. I hope this particular post of mine is the same. However, I've been called before “The Mighty Suggestion Destroyer” and it makes me feel sometimes that I say “No Support” to a large amount of suggestions. The slap of reality that you've given me made me realize that I didn't give your suggestion much thought, so let me try again.

My biggest problem with your suggestion is that it gets rid of studio notifications entirely. You frequent the forums, so I'm sure you know that removing studio notifications is rejected — but even if they weren't, I think they're useful, and I know others appreciate them as well.

I think a much better suggestion — which has been suggested before — is the option to turn off studio activity notifications. The main reason I said “No Support” is because of the removal of these notifications. The rest of your ideas, however, are pretty good. I like the idea of viewing specific studio activity from “My Stuff.”

However, studio notifications would need to stay. This is because of a rather simple argument: you can view the number of loves, favorites, remixes, and comments from “My Stuff” as well — however, we still receive notifications for these. I think there are some obvious parallels here — after all, there has never been a suggestion called “Remove comment notifications.” I'm not sure why studio notifications must be treated differently.

With all that in mind, allow me to rescind my earlier post and try again with a changed, more concise viewpoint:

Support, but only if there was still an option to view studio activity notifications.

Your idea to view studio activity from “My Stuff” is a good idea, and has no problems. However, I dislike the idea of removing studio activity messages entirely. I wouldn't say that “most” Scratchers dislike them, in fact, a lot of us do find them useful. An option to turn off certain messages would probably just be the most beneficial to everybody.

Perhaps my first post wasn't as constructive as I'd hoped it would be — but I don't think that I deserve to be called “lazy” as a result. I hope this clears things up and shows my true, constructive feelings about your suggestion — which I would say has some good merit to it.

Ya know about the button on projects that show you all the studios you're part of and whether you can add the project to those studios?

Maybe there can be something like that, but with studio notifications instead of projects.

So you can choose which studios you'd like to get notifications about and which ones you wouldn't.

Not sure if the Scratch Team/anyone else considered this idea before

Not at all… I don't really understand this statement, I'd like to ask for elaboration on this.
Although it says how many new comments, new projects added, etc. there were, that doesn't oblige anyone to check out what was added or removed. It's just a notifier of how many new things happened. If you did actually go on the studio itself and check out the new activities, that wouldn't really change anything from if it was a notification. When you receive a notification, I don't see how this would change, wouldn't you still check out the new activities..?

I just re-read this again, and I think you meant that in order for the studios in question to disappear from “new activity in studios”, you'd have to individually go check out that studio. In that case, if that's actually what you meant, I thought of a possible solution. My suggestion is that you could have a box that says “ok” where when you click it, you acknowledge the fact that there were new activities in that studio and a checkmark appears. Later on, that studio would disappear from the “new activity in studios” section. Even better, since this would take more time than just reading your notifications, you could also have an “ok” button for all studios that had a new activity that day. Once checked, all studios are checked and you acknowledge that there were new things in all of those studios.

Za-Chary wrote:

No support for this. More specifically, turn off studio notifications on some studios only would be better, in my opinion.

As I've learned by reading some posts on this thread, it would be better to have the option to disable receiving notifications from certain studios. Some people curate big studios, and when you curate one of those big studios, you're pretty much guaranteed that there will be an activity every single day. But since you go on it very often, you don't want to receive a notification about it, because you already know that something will happen.
On the other side, people might be curating studios that aren't that big and don't have much activity. Thus, they would like to receive a notification when something happens, studio activity would be useful in that case.

The inconveniences of having the option to enable / disable studio notifications would be: either you get a bunch of studio notifications where some are useful and some are useless, or you don't receive any studio notifications at all although you'd like to receive some from a few studios only.
The only benefit I can think of is that people would stop complaining about them.

However, if you had the option to only disable / enable studio notifications for some studios, you would be able to decide whether or not to receive notifications for some studios. You'd be satisfied because:
  • You receive studio notifications from the studios you want only, and there I think that lots of people would agree that studio notifications are not useless.
  • You don't receive studio notifications from studios you know are big and have an activity every day, so your message box wouldn't be spammed by extra messages anyways.
  • People who are in hundreds of studios and get tons of studio notifications a day could potentially considerably diminish studio notifications. Sure, they still probably could have a lot of notifications, but you'd see the amount of complaints drastically drop, since in this case the studio notifications would be the useful ones.

This is how I picture how you could decided whether or not to receive notifications from some studios:

Regarding going to the studio itself: my initial thought was that you would have to go to the studio to see the specific activity. This would occur in the notification system as well as the “My Stuff” system. I do agree that an “OK” checkbox would be good — that would prevent people from actually having to go to the studio.

Regarding the option to turn off notifications: I think “no support” is a little too strong here — I didn't necessarily say to turn off all studio notifications. Turning off some is a good idea.

I'd like to make things clear: I support the “My Stuff” implementation, as long as studio activity notifications can still exist in some way, shape, or form.

I like getting messages from certain studios, too. So deleting the notifications entirely would get rid of the helpful ones along with the not-so-helpful ones.

If I can add something to this suggestion, too, here's an additional idea: what if there was a checkbox on the studio base to let you choose if you want notifications from that studio? Studios with the box checked will send you notifications, while others not checked won't send them. This is kind of like the “Allow anyone to add projects” checkbox.
If you prefer me not to add this idea, feel free to ignore this. But please consider it! I believe this would be helpful.
