I have these two friends, who I'm going to call Ness (a boy) and Jordan (a girl). The three of us have been close friends since the two of them transferred to my school last year. Best friends, even. But Ness has been straying away from us lately. He still sits with us at lunch, but he hangs out with bad influences in class and rarely hangs out with us at recess, usually going to play four square. He developed a “system” (which he later told us his mom had told him to do) where he would play four square one day and be with us another. But he always plays four square, even when he promises us he's going to hang out with us. He offers little to no justification for his behavior, other than “I like four square.” But today, I asked him if we were his best friends (something I had been prompted to do after a different friend asking him something and hearing his response). He responded with saying, “My best friends are where I used to live.”
And my heart was broken. After how close we'd been, that's all we were? I felt deceived, tricked into thinking we were best friends when we weren't. I know he is probably still grieving the move, but Jordan and I told him that he can't live in the past and has to keep making new friends. He says we are his friends, just not his best ones. I felt so sad, and I feel like crying just writing this. I'd called him my best friend- and Jordan too. They were the first friend group I had in a long time and were friends when I had very few. But hearing him say that made me feel like I wasn't worth nearly as much to him as he was meant to me. Please help

Oh! I’m so sorry. I know who that feels and personally I’m not the greatest fan of friends and ‘best’ friends and I know how it feels. You don’t really have any control over how other people feel and what friends they want to make, so just talk to him. Maybe something happening at home that you don’t know about that makes him miss his other friends more. And anyway if you consider him one of your ‘best’ friends then he is, he just might not acknowledge it. Going in to high school this year heaps of my friends have moved to different schools because there are people there that (even though they don’t say it) they value more then me and want to be with them. However my Mum told be that Friends will always come and go, but there’s will always be room for new ones. Anyway… I don’t really know but I guess I hope that helps?
