And Young Link, his mother died in the manga even though it was never shown in-game…

My headcanon is that they got jealous of the New Leaf player character (Since the Villager in Smash is the one from City Folk) because they were taller and therefore seen as more attractive, were spoiled by Isabelle, were in Mario Kart 8, and had their own campsite. In fact, they were so jealous of the New Leaf player character, that they now hate everyone and refuse to ever talk again.
