Scratch 3.0 Technical Discussion
I personally dislike the new beta idea. The many current users of Scratch may find it difficult to get used to such a new format and buttons and such, seeing as this is a kids website. Scratchers, such as myself, are used to and enjoy using the current formats for the Scratch Editor. It is simple, easier to understand, and has been used by kids for many years now.
I understand if Scratch Team is persistent in improving their demographics and the overall ‘look’ and ‘neatness’ of the website, but I personally dislike the beta, considering it's difficulty in learning and adapting to. I've enjoyed using Scratch, using it for over 3 years and partaking in the animation community, specifically animating to music and skits, and it would be much harder to adapt to the new formats used in 3.0 beta, meaning i'd have to spend time to first adapt and understand the new buttons, placing of elements and such, and would struggle with it. This kind of change may affect the community negatively or make them loose interest in the idea of learning newer, more confusing Scratch Editor formats.

Whether you like it or not, design is always changing. It's ok… But I was actually a bit grossed out. No offence, but it looks too modern. And how come it's switched sides?! This is really confusing. But it's ok, I'll try and get used to it…

Actually, the stage in pre-2.0 versions was on the right. It's a return to an older layout.

I loved the sound editor! I just tried it out, I guess a cool addition would be to know exactly how much time does a selected portion of a sound take, that would be really helpful.

I like this scratch 3.0 very much.
A new block was added and it became very workable.
It would be nice to update to scratch 3.0 in the near future.
Good luck with your development.

Scratch 3 won't be official until january first. In the meantime you can keep using Scratch 2 to create your projects. Scratch 2 won't be supported for long, as Flash, on which Scratch 2 relies, won't be supported anymore soon. will we be still be able to use the 2.0 version to make projects and share them?

When will changing the speed of a sprite be easier? And will you be able to convert a Scratch 2 project to Scratch 3 format?
Other than that, it's great.

Scratch 3.0 Technical Discussion
thanks for the help!Welcome to the Scratch 3.0 FAQs
What is Scratch 3.0?
Scratch 3.0 is the next generation of Scratch. It expands how, what, and where you can create with Scratch. With Scratch 3.0, you will be able to play Scratch projects on your phone, create Scratch projects on your tablet, and control Scratch projects with your voice. And there are many other new features too! All projects made in Scratch 2.0 should be compatible with the new 3.0 version. Scratch 3.0 is a fork of Google's Blockly project. It will eventually should be faster due to it using HTML5 rather than flash. There are some tasks that Scratch 3.0 is already much faster at than Scratch 2.0, but in general resource utilization and some overall performance work still remains to be done. We completed a bunch of performance optimizations on the VM over the past few months and will be continuing (and prioritizing reducing overall resource utilization) in March.

When will the Scratch website transition to Scratch 3.0?
The ST plans to launch the online version of Scratch 3.0 in 2018. For people without Internet connectivity, an offline version of the Scratch 3.0 programming editor will be available later in 2018/2019. You can find a preview of the site here: https://preview.scratch.mit.edu Or if you would like to see the latest beta build http://llk.github.io/scratch-gui/develop
What has changed in Scratch 3.0?
The editor features an all-new block design and GUI:
A number of changes have been made to the Scratch user interface, to make it easier to use and learn. Here are a few of the changes:
- You can now scroll through all of the blocks (from all of the categories) in a single list
- The stage is now on the right, instead of the left
- There are now new ways to add sprites and backdrops and extensions
- Some blocks (such as “point in direction”) have a more visual and intuitive way to select inputs
- All projects now start with a variable (called “my variable”) to help make them more visible for beginners
- The pen blocks and music blocks are now Extensions to allow adding of features while simplifying the basic block palette
- Color picker blocks offer more options and control
Where can I find the source code for Scratch 3.0?
To distribute the workload, and make management easier, Scratch 3.0 is split up into several interconnected segments. All of these intricate pieces are available on the official GitHub page found here
Examples include:
There are also plans to add support for using Scratch on mobile devices
Can we use PicoBoards?
No, they are not supported anymore. You can use Scratch 2 Offline Editor.
What blocks are coming? What blocks will be changed?
Added/Replaced:
These blocks are moved to Extensions.
Music Extension:
Pen Extension: All pen blocks

Scratch 3.0 Technical Discussion
Dear Scratch Team,
I see you have started to change many things on Scratch 3.0. But, some of us Scratchers don't agree with your… choices. First of all, we think the blocks are too… childish. I mean, I see you were aiming for little kids, but some of us just think it should be aimed for all ages. Now, the next problem is with the coding. Not only will it make it even HARDER for us to code bigger projects, most of the project us old generation Scratchers worked on won't WORK and may never will. Now, I have a huge problem myself with this. I already have an old computer, so I can't record my voice OR music, I can't copy costumes, and when I click on the stage or anywhere else, it say Save Background. These new coding designs you added might e the last block to stop me from making projects, which was the WHOLE point I joined Scratch! Also, you haven't added any NEW blocks. You only changed blocks. Why can't you give us easier blocks to work with so it would be easier to code. And my last problem…. why can't you ask US Scratchers how WE would think of this and that for Scratch? Believe it or not, some of us have good ideas that COULD be put to use in Scratch.
But this is just our opinions.

Would you mind giving specific examples of projects that do not work? Could you post their URLs on my profile page most of the project us old generation Scratchers worked on won't WORK and may never willhttps://scratch.mit.edu/users/s_federici/? Thanks in advance.

I understand this completely. Scratch animated the blocks and this does make i a little bit harder to use. (considering that they changed the colors of events and controls.) I understand completely about this and I want to say the same thing. Dear Scratch Team,

Scratch 3.0 itself is really very nice, I tried it out and it worked very well. I use scratch mostly for art, and this newer version i think will be good for it. Although when in the costumes section, and you've zoomed in, there isn't a sliding bar for left to right, and you cannot click and move it around, it only selects sections. The only way to move it is with a mouse pad, so i was wondering, will you be adding a sliding bar and or an option to move the screen with a mouse? I could have just skipped over it, or missed it, but it didnt seem to work for mine.
Thanks!

Do the aesthetics make it overall harder for you to click on a block and drag towards another block?
Or is it the fact that the stage has moved back to its original position before 2.0?
Look I know some of us have mixed opinions on the new scratch GUI and we will adjust to them eventually, personally I think the GUI looks rather nice and using the word childish is a bit of an exaggeration in my opinion. Please be more clear on how making the GUI obviously more direct and clean going to make it harder for us to program larger projects?

Excuse me, but I had some questions. First, will we have all of our things still? Like, will I still have my old account and all my projects? And also, will there still be the option to see other peoples projects (I know it's a dumb question, but I'm just asking)? Thanks for taking the time to read this!
