Yep. That's my question.

Without update of Phosphorus, it won't support the new file format (.sb3).
But, you won't need Phosphorus because Scratch will be HTML5!

Phosphorus is also used because of its performance, a characteristic Scratch 3.0 lacks. Without update of Phosphorus, it won't support the new file format (.sb3).

You should be able to on projects made in the 2.0.x era that were not edited in the 3.0 era, or projects from the 1.x.x era which were edited in the 2.0.x era but not the 3.0 era.

Well phosphorus wont really be needed but if it is all thats really needed is a translator and a minor change in the code of where its fetching the project from

I am mainly interested in the performance boost using Phosphorus (as alluded to by Sheep_maker above) as one of my new projects (not yet shared) currently runs at 5 FPS.

They're both HTML5. What could Phosphorus do differently than the native 3.0 player won't do to make it any faster?Phosphorus is also used because of its performance, a characteristic Scratch 3.0 lacks. Without update of Phosphorus, it won't support the new file format (.sb3).

Both have advantages and disadvantages, but let's say phosphorus is removed

Phosphorus does some optimisations that Scratch 3.0 can't do for a variety of reasons, including having to allow users to edit the code while the project is playing. They're both HTML5. Edit: How does Snap! compare to Phosphorus and Scratch 3.0? They're not exactly the same, but they're all made in HTML5.

JIT compilation rather than interpreting, AFAIU.

Perhaps this recent GitHub issue is relevant: https://github.com/LLK/scratch-gui/issues/2550
I think we can expect that the APIs to download Scratch 2.0 projects will still be around once 3.0 is released, so programs like Phosphorus should still work. Otherwise, you can use tosh to use Phosphorus's player; it opens projects from local files, rather than from the Scratch API.

You can also drag a file into phosphorus and use the 2.0 offline editor.

See this Scratch Wiki article on a performance comparsion. Article is in German, but it should be not problem to get the diagrams and numbers.
