I'm not against remixing, but I saw someone leave because their hard work was wasted. They spent HOURS on a drawing, getting everything right, and then someone remixed it and changed one color. They found that disrespectful, I mean who wouldn't? Let's say as an example I make a 250 level platformer and someone remixes it and changes the character from a red ball to a blue ball! That would be sad to me because while I put a lot of work into it, they just did a few clicks. So I think that remixes are split. Some are good and better than the project, and others are insults to the original.

Though one may look cheerful on the outside, on the inside, their soul may be close to shattering. ~NibiruX

Hi. I've made this game which has had over 1000 views. I'd love to turn it into a collab. project if anyone has any ideas to improve it? You could of course remix it yourself, but I'd much rather work with someone to make it better. What does it need? Spaceships? Jokes? Any ideas please…

I prefer not to remix, as it shows unorginality and it makes the uploader's image look lazy. NOTE THAT THIS IS MY OPINION.

Remixing isn't as bad as people make it seem and is actually a lot of fun when done correctly. I'm going to give an example of what I'm doing, which is changing the Pong starter project into an actual game. You have the main engine, but everything else is up to you, want to add a scoring system, go ahead, add an intro sure, just make sure there's a way to quickly restart the game once you lose, want to add an animation once you get a certain score, go ahead, all yours.

You got that right! I love making quality remixes. Direct copies, however, can be really irratating.

I used to have a banner linking to a collab, but then everyone in the collab became inactive. So now I need something new to put in my sig.

AHHHH THIS IS AWESOME!! No one ever thinks about this sort of thing, and everyone takes remixes for granted!! TY for this!

What is a remix?

According to the Scratch Wiki, “A remix is a modified and shared version of an uploaded project.” This means that a remix is taking an existing project, adding a unique spin and re-uploading it. Remixes can change anything from adding a small feature to adjusting something big in the project.

How do I remix?

To remix a project, open the desired project by another Scratcher and make a change in the code or art. Instead of the usual save button, there will be an orange “remix” button where the save button should be. Once you click this, your own copy of the project with the change is saved with the original title with the word remix at the end. You can continue to make changes, or click share. Make sure to give the original creator credit in the Notes and Credits of your project, link to the project (optional), and you're done!

Why should I remix?

Multiple reasons exist as to why you should remix; for instance, people in collaborations such as Phantom Shadows remix to add features to the project they are collaborating on. Another reason to remix could be debugging known bugs in the project of another Scratcher, or compressing their scripts. People may also remix to enter a competition such as a Colouring Contest. Finally, remixing is a great way to get familiar with what certain blocks do and other ways of doing things.

What makes a quality remix?

A “quality remix” can mean many different things to many different people. A quality remix could be adding a useful feature to a project, or making a spin-off of the project. If a lot of people are asking for a feature in the comments of a project, you could also remix to add that. Really, a quality remix is when you take a normal project, put your heart into it, add your unique voice to the project, and come out with a brand-new project. It's based on a different project but is it's own project, with its own project idea, with its own message.

What isn't a quality remix?

One thing that definitely is not a quality remix is if you take a project, remix it, and don't change anything. This goes against the Community Guidelines and is reportable. Why is this bad? Well, someone put their heart into the original project, just to see a million people copy it. But a lot of project creators love people to remix their projects to see how different people take their project and add a diversity of new things to it. So if you follow the tips above on what makes a quality remix, then you might even make the original project creator smile.

What should I do when I see a copied project?

When you see a copied project, a project which is an exact copy of another without anything being changed, you should report it to the Scratch Team, including a URL to the original project. Spamming the comments or being a vigilante about it doesn't help. However, you shouldn't report a remix if it is simply a recolor, or another person's art with different colors. Although recolors are generally frowned upon, they are allowed as long as credit is given, even if the original creator asked for no recolors of their art.

Remixing isn't bad because it appears on the game page under Remix's. Also the game could have needed some improvement.

Well I am making a project, instead of doing it through remixes I was planning on saving the file and emailing it to my friends in real life. Then they edit it and email the project file to me, is remixing better?

I know this is a little old (congrats on the sticky!), but I wish I had found this when I was a new scratcher. I was scared when I made a remix because I thought people would get triggered at me because I did it wrong, this article is super helpful! Also, is this considered necroposting? I'm still pretty new here, I thought necroposting didn't apply to stickies, but I might be wrong.
