How does the Scratch Team really choose projects to be featured?
I was looking through the “propose projects to be featured” studio and there is an enormous variety of projects that are proposed to be featured but don't get featured. A few of these are:
However the majority of featured projects tend to be:
I'm not saying there's anything wrong with these projects, but personally, every day when I go onto Scratch and look at the featured projects bar, 90% of the time it's another one of those types of projects, and not one of the many high quality unique projects that go unnoticed.
It's not that these projects don't deserve to be featured - it's that only featuring certain types of projects doesn't show what all of Scratch is about and doesn't draw attention to other types of projects that are good quality, leaving them to go for months and years unnoticed and barely getting any recognition.
Why is it mainly these types of projects that get featured most of the time, as opposed to more varied projects and complex projects?
- Interesting, non-generic platformers
- Complex (not simple) games that are unique (this type of project is one I rarely ever see featured)
- Operating systems
- Educational, informative projects
However the majority of featured projects tend to be:
- Simple games with vector art styles that mainly involve dodging, changing colours or similar
- Generic platformers (not so much recently)
- Animations with certain types of art style
- “Create Your Own” projects (some of which don't offer the user much choice, although this isn't necessarily a bad thing)
- Tutorials for arts/crafts in real life
I'm not saying there's anything wrong with these projects, but personally, every day when I go onto Scratch and look at the featured projects bar, 90% of the time it's another one of those types of projects, and not one of the many high quality unique projects that go unnoticed.

Check out Life Raft Survival, my new advanced sandbox survival game with crafting, building, transportation, weather events, tropical storms, and more!
In the game you're stranded at sea after a mysterious crash and must survive in an unforgiving tropical island environment collecting resources and crafting, in an attempt to finally be rescued.

Maybe they put simple projects on the front page to encourage new scratchers to create. Maybe.

I think you're exaggerating a bit. Only 4 of the last 15 featured projects are types of projects that you say are most commonly featured. 4/15 is 27%- much less than 90%.
That being said, I think the problem is that a large majority of people enjoy making those kinds of projects- so they're a bit more likely to be featured simply because there's more of them.

Why? The thing is you are missing the point- the ST don't and won't choose advanced projects. They just choose better-than-average projects from ordinary scratchers

Could you give some examples? I think it depends on your definition of a complex project. I had a look at the “propose projects to be featured” studio and there a huge variety of complex games and other projects I mentioned in the first post, but these weren't featured.

Not really all the time Super advanced projects are generally amazing enough to get attention on their own.

Okay here's something that might help
Featured projects are not normally chosen for being an advanced project — rather, what is looked for are projects that are unique and have an interesting touch.

I am wondering this too. I think the more complex stuff should be featured

Then, it'll be like Geometry Dash: the creator only features the most complex levels from the most famous creators. I am wondering this too. I think the more complex stuff should be featured
I think the Scratch Team should feature some complex projects and some good unnoticed projects.

The Scratch Team tries not to feature projects by famous Scratchers. Therefore, if the projects you've been complaining aren't featured are by popular Scratchers, the ST wouldn't feature them, because that project will probably be top-loved in a week.
