Things will get brutal once you get later into the game.
There is a massive difficulty spike which happens, I think, just before Princess Toadstool (Peach) joins your party.

Well, Mallow's a pain, no damage to basically any enemy, he's basically a person to just give out items while Mario does the attacking

Where are you at in the game?
You'll get to switch out Mallow once you unlock Bowser.

At times, it would be hard, because if you lost all of your lives, you would have to go right back to your last checkpoint, or something like that. I never finished the game, because the last Boss Battle (Or, at least I think it was the last… I can just tell sometimes.) was too hard, but the game was still fun.

(Now that I have a Wii U, though, maybe I can try "New Super Mario Bros. U" sometime!)

You're not the only one. When I was like 8, I got a Wii bundled with New Super Mario Bros Wii. I struggled to get past the first level (only passed it once, but lost all of my lives on the second level). Eventually, I lost interest of both the game and the console and went web gaming with Animal Jam.
