Support, just as long as it stops you from uploading them to the site when the size gets too high.

Support for intense projects. How about moving it up to 60 MB?
No, the suggestion is we completely remove the size limit for offline projects. I totally support this; why have a size limit for something that's not going to take up server space? In this case, the only limit is yourself your hard drive. You could even convert the project to swf and put it in your own website or something like that, taking up your server space instead of the ST's. I totally support this; but keep the limit the same for the online editor.

Yeah, I have had the same problem with a MASSIVE project, and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to what to do to decrease the size of my project. Thanks

My concern is that a lot of people use the offline editor with the intention of eventually uploading the project to the site (I use it this way myself), It would be a bummer to go to do that and then have it rejected by the site because it is too large.

I guess the best of both worlds would be to have the off-line editor warn you when you go over the online editor - but not prevent you from doing so. I'm not sure what the best way to have it do so would be - a one-time check the first time you exceed it? A warning whenever it saves? Have it remove the share buttons when the project gets too big?
Why not have a simple bar or something saying how large the project was upon last save?

OR EVEN BETTER, why not have there be a little ribbon above the editor but below the top bar (where remix/share buttons are online) that says, “Oversized project. This project cannot be uploaded.”

Size Limitations for Projects

Before diving right into the issue I'm facing, I am well aware of the fact that the expansion of servers is costly and do not come at a low price. While many Scratchers (myself included) would love to raise the size limit for projects, I do understand that it is virtually impossible to arbitrate a figure that will satisfy the Scratch Team and the rest of the community. Therefore, in spite of my sincere hope that this curtailment will eventually be eradicated entirely with Scratch's constant growth, my expectations aren't too optimistic in the short term.

However, the problem I'm posed with which bothers me immensely is that the same restrictions apply for the offline editor. Currently, I am developing a graphically demanding game without any ambitions of releasing it on Scratch (due to the aforementioned limitations). I was notified today that I would exceed the confined value of 50 MB with the addition of an extra costume to a sprite. As my purpose of designing this project is solely for home-use and nothing else, I find it rather pointless to be prevented from progressing beyond a certain point if it isn't going to clog the Scratch servers or incur supplementary costs. The 1.4 software enabled unlimited sizes of project creation and to me, it makes absolutely no sense why this should be any different with the new version.

I'd be happy if a Scratch Team member would please address this complication and contribute his/her opinion. Honestly, I believe this ought to be changed. What do you guys think?
Well, someone's done their research. Support.

It is easy to split a project in two, if it gets too big. No support.

No it isn't - not if the project depends on the two halves communicating.

Also, this is for the offline editor. Please read before you post.

It is as easy as
  1. save list (project 1)

  2. load list (project 2)

What about a popup the first time you reach over the 50Mb limit, and after that the area that would say share says Project to big.

walkcycle wrote:

You could do that if you were planing to share the project. But why is that a reason not to add this when Scratch's server space is not concerned?

That still isn't real-time.

You can ignore the conditional if you want (“if it gets too big”), but really small projects might be difficult to split.

And it would grow tedious to do it all the time. This may be part of the reason they picked such a big limit for projects.

True. It may take a minute or two to go from one project to another.

I don't see a reason why the offline editor isn't like this: I mean the 1.4 editor had it, why not the 2.0 editor?

And all the world over, each nation's the same,
They've simply no notion of playing the game.
They argue with umpires, they cheer when they've won,
And they practice beforehand, which ruins the fun!

You could, but what would be the point of having to split a project up into 2 parts on the offline editor other than the 50 mb limit? What even is the point of the 50 mb limit in the offline editor.

I don't mean small projects, I mean projects that will never be uploaded online to Scratch which means they will never take up server space.

True. It may take a minute or two to go from one project to another.
But what about when a game is use, and depends of every part of the project to work? This might work for a long story based game, but when it's an infinite free roamer, with no set goals, randomly generated maps, and a ton of items blocks and mobs it will be very hard to split that up if it reaches the data limit. The offline editor's data limit prevents people from working on a large project like this when the only real concern of data is how much your computer has.

Now. You can download it here. It contains the semi-online editor and the offline editor. Just follow the usage instructions on the front page of my archive. My original plan failed, so there's no size limit, and you can check the size with File > Check project size.
Link does not work 2018.

Look, it isn't real time, and save/load list don't work with cloud data. Therefore, it's mostly useless. It might be doable for an animation, but for a game it probably is not.
