I am writing a speech about scratch and I want to find out why projects start with the cat sprite. Can someone tell me please?

The cat sprite is the mascot of scratch.

There needs to be some sort of basic sprite for people to first use. When creating Scratch they needed a mascot for it, they came up with Scratch cat. So, they us that. If they went with a different mascot that would likely be the sprite used. It's also something people would recognize.

The Scratch Cat is the mascot of Scratch. Also, it's a basic sprite for people to begin with.

That's Scratch Cat. Cats are good at scratching because of their innate intelligence and claws.

I agree with powercon5.

It is easier for new Scratchers to write their first program if a sprite has already been created for them.
Then they can immediately add a block such as “move 10 steps”.
Otherwise they would first need to create a sprite and then add a costume.

The Scratch Cat costume is used as Scratch Cat is the mascot of Scratch.
