IP Banned Users Using Offline Editor? (2.0)
-snip-However, the DA stuff moved on to here. I've seen it.
The fact that someone got IP banned could be for NUMEROUS reasons. Some people get IP banned because of their actions on Deviantart, which little kids have no business on. Scratch rules shouldn't really apply there, DA has their own riles that people are meant to follow, and that means that no, we don't follow most of the scratch rules there. No one should not get banned for DArama, it's unfair. Some people get IP banned for posting mean things about another scratcher, and in the situations I saw on DA, usually they deserved it (I don't know about other situations, but this is what I saw). You really wouldn't get arrested by the cops if you were calling someone a ‘b*#<%’, just maybe a look of annoyance. Same if you called someone a ‘b*#<%’ for getting their friends IP banned on scratch for DArama, which would then get them IP banned. The most, in my school at least, you'd get for both is a detention, not an arrest. Sure, you'd get IP banned for saying something that would actually get you arrested, but I don't see that occur really often.
This isn't the real world; it's designed to be child-friendly. Sure, you can have your own beliefs about that sort of stuff–but it's the ST's website, not yours or deviantart's..
People shouldn't be banned for behavior on other websites, but they should be banned if it moves onto this website. It's completely fair, in my eyes, to get banned for swearing on a child-friendly website or having offsite arguments move onto Scratch.

A lot of people seem to be missing the point of bans. There are 2 reasons for a ban:
-To prevent them from getting to the website to spam again.
-As a punishment.
Just wondering, does IP mean wifi network or computer? How do you know what the IP is? What if a user keeps switching IP?

Exactly. Plus, IP bans are used in severe cases or repeated offenses– the situations you're talking about, ESS8830, would probably result in just an account ban, or maybe even just a warning (depending).-snip-However, the DA stuff moved on to here. I've seen it.

None of the IP banned users I've seen let their swearing get onto Scratch. In fact, one was banned for switching accounts!

Yeah, someone reported them for supposedly ban evading, but they ASKED the ST to deactivate that account so they could move to a new one. -_-Really? Wow. That's just- wow.-snip-However, the DA stuff moved on to here. I've seen it.

Okay, so since everything online is free to use, how about fine a user for access to the offline editor for download. Total denial of service if they don't pay, profit if they do.SCRATCH IS FREE. (repeated excess text removed by moderator - please keep it concise)

Uhm, a bit on a side note, but instead of an error page, why not show the reasons of a person being banned instead of their profile?

I know what a ban is. I just don't see why someone's creativity flow should be stopped if they do things that don't have to do with others' creativity flows. I see an (free!) offline editor and the (free!) website associated with it as two different things. I'm sorry, ST, if you don't like offering these kinds of (free!) things to someone who you can't trust because they misbehaved on your (free!) website, but I think depriving someone of learning the basics of programming and letting their creativity flow (freely!) is a bit much.
Darn, I had a metaphor in mind, but it doesn't exactly work and I can't find a better one.

If somebody breaks rules on a site severely or repeatedly enough to get banned, ST would prefer not to provide a free service to them.

It's like at a library. They let people use the computers for free, and if people abuse their privileges, the people in charge ban them from the Internet, and I would imagine the same would go for entering the library in different cases, as well.
And if it's really thought of as ‘depriving someone from learning the basics of programming and letting their creativity flow’, they are always welcome to go onto another site and learn a language that way– Codecademy, for instance. Plus, there are always books.
Or Tynker if one is desperate.

Support. Scratch is free software, but preventing people from using it, even where they will cause no harm to the Scratch community, seems, to me, like a violation of the idea of free software. Also, couldn't people download it from the source on git?

You don't see a “Scratch 2.0 For Dummies” book out in chapters do you?
And in Code academy, there is nothing like scratch. Believe me. It's hard to switch programming languages.

…it doesn't make sense to provide a {free and non-profit!} service who did something so bad that an IP block had to be put into place.but still you can't do much if a person already downloaded the offline editor before the IP block was issued
^^^^^^I'm surprised it doesn't already do that. Support!^^
