"Girls Only" and "Boys Only" Studios...

Are “Girls Only” and “Boys Only” Studios allowed on Scratch? I've seen plenty of them, and I've even reported one, but I don't think it was deleted….. I just want to know before I find some, and report a few

Studios supporting specifically female scratchers or male scratchers are allowed, but if only girls/boys are ALLOWED into the studio, then they aren't and can be reported. Positive support is ok, but discrimination isn't.

That's not discrimination - under that logic, you could classify the fact that I haven't been invited to be an SDS curator as ‘discrimination’
The managers always get to choose who's in their studio for whatever reason they want, if its not specifically putting down other groups. Really only controversial issues shouldn't and probably aren't allowed (like a “white people only” studio), due to the usual reason of why these studios exist. A “girls only” studio is usually created because girls like being friends with other girls, not because of some inherent sexism issue. You've probably seen or can imagine Christian only studios, those are, for the same reason, fine. It all comes down to intent.

If the studio is called something like GIRLS ONLY, BOYS SUCK, yeah that's reportable.
If the studio is called something like Girls club, and then in the description “only girls can be curators,” I think that should be fine.

As always, if you personally feel attacked, offended, or discriminated against, you can probably report it.

Edit: sounds like official stance is no, these studios should not exist.

Edit 2: nevermind official stance is the one I just explained above

I'm pretty sure they're not.
It's wrong to not let people into a studio because of their gender, age, disorders, religion, political views, etc., or really just ANYTHING about them.
If it's a studio like “(insert fandom name here) fans”, then that's allowed because it's for members of a fandom and they're not trying to say “Oh, you can't join because you're a girl” which makes no sense, nothing is just for girls or just for boys.
I also find it wrong to separate girls and boys.. what about other genders (like genderfluid, genderless, bigender, etc.)? Where would they go?
I find studios like these very offensive because females/males are often stereotyped as having a certain bad character trait and people sometimes hate the opposite gender because of these stereotypes. Hey, I know a lot of boys at my old school who were just plain mean, but that doesn't mean I have a grudge against everyone who is of the male gender. I know some boys who are very nice.
However, as said above, if the studio allows all genders to curate, that's likely fine.

This is my personal opinion, I'm not sure what the scratch team's official stance is, and I can't speak for them.

Only girls curating probably wouldn't be allowed, from what I've seen. The SDS metaphor doesn't work because in order to be an SDS curator you have to have certain traits that come in useful in the studio, not just be a certain gender/type of person. Being female does not make you any more qualified to the responsibilities of a curator (inviting people and sometimes moderating the studio), but being, for instance, helpful and alert in an SDS does.

I realize that I've contradicted myself - if a studio exists to uplift girls specifically or boys specifically, they shouldn't have a problem with a different gendered person also wanting to support that gender as well.

So yeah, OP, reporting studios like that is probably a good idea. That being said, somebodies gender can still be a part of the trait you are looking for in a studio curator, it just can't/shouldn't be necessarily required or the only thing you're looking for.

Then why are there tons of ‘Christian clubs’ (no offense to christians that pretty much discriminate everybody, but they don't get taken down.

As long as they don't ban atheists or people of other religions from commenting/curating/managing, they should be fine.

Wait a minute…So only allowing Christians to join is not allowed? Woah, every Christian studio I've been to is breaking the rules, and I thought it was totally fine…O-O

Both allowed - Christian studios are for people how share beliefs and boy scouts and girl scouts are also beliefs in a sort.

This makes me so angry. If you have a Christian-only studio and make some theological knowledge a requirement to curate or manage, that is NOT discrimination.

Going back to KingOfAwesome's SDS analogy, putting expectations on curators or managers to have some basic traits/skills/knowledge is totally fine in that scenario, it's not at all different for Christian studios.

Also, saying ‘no offence to xxxxx’ does not in any way mean you are not being offensive or justify any offensive statements you make in the post. This is also true for real life.

No, it is totally fine to require some theological knowledge to curate or manage a studio.

Yeah, also, being a Christian is a choice. Being a boy or a girl is not a choice.

Back on the main topic, I'd say they're not or shouldn't be allowed. It's literally just gender discrimination.

Managers can choose who gets into there studios. I wouldn't report unless it was strongly anti-male/female.

I can't decide on this one. I've seen many groups in real life that only allow a certain gender (such as Boy and Girl Scouts). And people here are saying it's discrimination.

Right but that is like saying are “Christian Only” studios allowed on Scratch?

So basically for the OP:

We dont really know - we have different opinions. It may just be best to ask the Scratch Team.

In a way, it kind of is discrimination. Not letting somebody join because of their religion is just the same as not letting somebody join because of their race, looks on politics, or sexual identity.

Yeah, also, being a Christian is a choice. Being a boy or a girl is not a choice.
It is. You can sexually identify as anything you want to be.
