[Wiki] Scratch 3.0 News from Scratch Conference

I'm moving this Scratch 3.0 news to here, for the better reading format. This is for the Scratch Wiki.

The original comment chain: link

Scratch 3.0 was discussed in the “What's Next for Scratch?” panel at the 2016 Scratch Conference. I have not altered my comments, and they were made on, or a few days after August 6, 2016. Le news:

Code

The ST will not be using an existing JS Scratch interpreter, but will instead be beating their own path, per say.

Scratch 3.0 will be written in HTML5, but primarily focus os JS, WebGL, Web Workers, and Web Audio.

Also, HTML5 is a general term that refers to the latest version of HTML + CSS + JS.

Scratch 3.0 will be on Android and iOS.

Scratch 3.0 will have to use new code for enabling extensions. This mostly impacts devices that connect to the computer through ports like USB. For the most part, extension can stay the same, but a few might need to be updated.

Scratch 3.0 currently has a barebones VM (for executing commands) and audio engine. Yesterday, they literally got Scratch 3.0 to beep. They hope to start work on the rendering engine in a few weeks, to have a prototype made by the end of the year, and for an alpha at the end of next year.

Search Bar & Captcha

The recent search bar overhaul was meant to give more relevant results. Removing forum search functionality was just a short term consequence, and the ST hopes to add it back. (I also planted the seeds of allowing Wiki search too. )

The old search bar was not usable in China because it used Google, which is blocked by the great firewall. The new search bar uses a custom-made search, so it is not blocked in China.

Scratch aims to replace the Google captcha for making an account with something new. That something new is currently being tested with Teacher accounts. The main goal of this is to use something other than Google, so that Scratch is more easily usable in China.

Other

Scratch 3.0 is indeed a collaboration between Google ad Scratch, which is partly fueled because some former-ST work for Google, and some former-Google work for Scratch.

Scratch will be coming out with 10 new packs of activity cards, 75 in total. On pack I know is focused on how to make a Dance game. The activities all are aimed at various interests.

Teachers can see when a student loves/favorites/comments/changes their profile/receives an alert. Teachers can see what the alert is for.

@IgDegOo:
It's not a question. It's more that I couldn't find a better forum to put this in. This isn't a suggestion, bug, request, project idea, advanced topic, something I'm reading, Spanish post, etc…

Commenting,

I found the 2016 Scratch conference link on Youtube.
Could you please share what time ‘What’s the next of Scratch?' started to be talking?

I believe the livestream didn't include the panels. Panels were separate events aside from the morning hurrah.

If you share the video, I'd be willing to double check.

Maybe there should be a ‘news’ forum…

Sorry, I have no idea why my post is all links. It's really odd. If you click on them they make you search the sentence in the Wiki.

I do. Take out the WIKI tag.

I love the speech extension idea! Everyone will add voice assistants to their OS's! Hopefully the alpha coming soon will be great fun to try.
