I've been wanting to learn Japanese for a VER long time, but for now I only know a few words; certainly nothing that'll get me very far in a conversation.

So, if you speak Japanese as your prime or secondary language, do you think you could give me any tips? Links, words, and tricks are all appreciated, but PLEASE don't link me any “Learn A language in 3 days!” things. I don't believe those. Arigato!

I don't speak japanese, but I've heard tae kim is a very good resource
not sure how helpful it would be for a total beginner, but you'll at least get the basics (hiragana, pronunciation, some grammar)

warning, though. japanese is one of the hardest languages to master for english speakers, along with chinese, arabic, and korean… I think it has to do with the grammar and the kanji.

So basically Japanese is the hardest language to learn.

Try direct translation first by learning the words, and then learning the correct order. That's how I taught myself English. (I'm Russian )

the list doesn't show every single language there is (for instance, it leaves out navajo, a language so hard to learn that it was used for codes in ww2, and tuyuca, a language with over 50 grammatical genders), and there are so many languages that it's basically impossible to say one is absolutely the hardest. plus, it varies depending on the learner's skills.

also, I feel like this list is kind of biased about extremely popular languages - all 5 most difficult languages have a huge number of speakers, especially chinese. naturally there would be more people who find those languages hardest to learn, since there's more data on them and tons of people try to learn them.

anyway, I think these are the hardest languages to learn fluently. japanese, as far as I've heard, isn't super hard to at least get the basics of and be able to communicate simple ideas in; it's learning it as well as a native that's extremely hard.

it kind of is true that japanese is used basically nowhere but japan, but it's not pointless to learn any language. it's good for your mind
(plus you can watch anime and listen to vocaloid songs more efficiently and effectively)

Try to get a book that just focuses on the words in pronunciation- don't skip straight to writing the characters

also an idea is to learn the syllabaries, katakana and hiragana, as soon as possible because that means right off a) you know all the sounds that can be made and hopefully how to pronounce them and b) you can read like 60% of text, even if you don't know what it means. plus it's probably the easiest part of learning the language so you can get something done right off.

Well, I'm sure you know of the three Japanese writing systems (hiragana, katakana and kanji). Right now, what I'm working on is memorizing the katakana and hiragana tables, and I found this for kanji. With kanji, though, know that there are MANY to learn, and knowing the most common ones is a good idea.

As for speaking Japanese, the book I use is called Japanese Demystified (which is also useful for writing in Japanese).

Agreed. Tae Kim really helped me with Japanese.
