Should a kid play games that has higher ratings than his/her age?

I'd say all games E10 and under are suitable for everyone. Terraria is T for alcohol as well as violence, blood and suggestive themes.

I don't find there to be too much wrong with Nintendo Land's E10+ rating. {EDIT: Wait, did you mean that E10+ was too high? It got a PG rating here in Australia and I would agree with you if that were the case.} I'm pretty sure the T for Terraria is also for some of the violence and gore present in the game. (Didn't Deadpool get a mature rating?)

answer:No.
One time I played Plants VS. Zombies, and the sound effect where the zombies eat your brain freaked me out(If you want to know, I lost on level 1-2). I didn't play again for a few months, and to this day, I've never used sound on Plants VS Zombies.
It was E10+ and I was around 7.

play sound [AAAAGH!!chomp chomp]
say [O_O] for (rest of life) secs

Well, I think it depends if there parents think its good enough. I mean, if there parents think the're old enough, than they probably are.
But, you're talking to the kid who watched Harry potter at 7, so I might have a different view.

In the US it's the other way around because you can't join the army until you're at least 18 and it's recommended that kids under 17 have parental guidance when playing CoD ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Decided to give out my reply again.

In my opinion, it's okay for a child to play a game which is supposed to be for mature audience, as long as (s)he knows what (s)he's doing and his/her parents approve. Even though there's no proof video games cause violence, there are reports of minors committing crimes after playing a video game.

My parents only allow to play games rated T or below. Fortunately, M-rated games don't appeal to me and Sonic the Hedgehog is mainly E (there are some E10+ Sonic games, however).

My parents don't allow me to play Shadow the Hedgehog, because of gun usage.

If the child and their parents are okay with it and the game isn't overly violent or inappropriate, then there should be no problem with it.

ok so a couple of months ago i posted something based on my very limited knowledge of what a couple of fifth graders were like so i'm going to try again

i actually don't know that many kids that play shooter games, but then again, basically all of my friends are the “smart kids” so what do you expect?

anyway, if you're a kid, i don't think you should play shooter games with blood. if there is no blood, or if the blood is like a few red pixels that appear for a split second (and not a realistic color for blood) then it's fine. unless you're like 6 or something.

ratings can be fair, and unfair. usually 10+ games tend to be fine, because they're rated that for one of these reasons:
1. one of the characters says “heck” at one point
2. the game involves fighting of any kind, but it's not bad
3. just to be on the safe side

however, 13+ games are not recommended unless you're either 13 or mature enough to be 13.

each kid is different though

It honestly depends on the maturity of the child. If a child has been taught and completely understands that certain content shouldn't be repeated in real life, then they may be okay playing games with an age rating higher than their age. For example, I've always been a lot more mature for my age, both physically and mentally, so I view content that most children my age wouldn't be ready for, and I don't repeat any of it (except the occasional slip of the tongue). However, someone I used to know wasn't allowed mature content by their parents, but they viewed it anyways in secret. They also used to attack me and I think they might have done long-lasting damage to my shoulderblade, which is a definite sign they probably weren't ready for what they were viewing in secret.

Parents should do their research on a game and not go based off the label on the box.

For example, if your nine-year-old asks for a Sims game, you might see at first it's rated T, but doing your research, you'll see it's a very creative open-world space for a child to express their imagination, where the worst things that happen are beds shaking, people turning into ghosts and sometimes peeing themselves.

If your nine-year-old asks for Naughty Bear or Senran Kagura Burst, you'll also see that they're also rated T, but doing your research will find that the former has an insanely sadistic tone, encouraging the player to murder and drive bears to suicide, and the latter is very much focused on female anatomy.

Maybe we should just have a better ratings system.
