switch costume to ((costume #) - (1))

switch costume to [ v]

There is an option

the workaround they gave me doesnt work

Hmmm. Just because there is a work-around doesn't necessarily mean that a suggestion has been rejected - and I actually don't remember the Scratch Team rejecting this. I note that there is a “switch backdrop to previous backdrop” option - seems like there could certainly be a matching “switch costume to previous costume” option, at the very least, even if there isn't a separate block.
