Whats up with these "Memes?"

About a month ago all these “Memes” kept showing up and they still are. They aren't memes, so why are they called that? and why are they about cats?

Here's the definition of meme:
noun
an element of a culture or system of behavior that may be considered to be passed from one individual to another by nongenetic means, especially imitation.

So that's it. A meme is not a funny picture or video, just a trend that is repeated a lot.
Therefore cat-dance-animations are memes.
