Project ideas to teach kids already familiar with scratch?

Merry Christmas everybody and a happy new year,

I am about to teach high school kids how to program using Scratch. The thing is, the kids have already been introduced to Scratch last year. Moreover, the kids are now in their first year in high school so the projects must be more challenging than those presented last year in junior high.

So, what I am looking for is ideas and/or samples of “advanced” Scratch projects in terms of implementation, design and programming logic.

Any ideas and/or example projects appreciated.

Thank you very much in advance,

Dimitris

Project ideas to teach kids already familiar with scratch?

I've seen a lot of seemingly complex projects on scratch, and what I've discovered is that most of them are games.
I've made several games myself, and yes, it is challenging. The things I've noticed get me thinking the most are such things as switching from one “screen” to another (such as a main menu to the game itself), scrolling backgrounds, and *gulp* AI.
I don't know how advanced your class is in programming, but these are some pretty useful things to learn how to do, and I'd say they're relatively challenging.

Another thing you might consider are puzzle games. Tetris, for example, is a very simple puzzle game that wouldn't be to overly complicated to make in scratch.

Just some of my thoughts.
Good luck!

A good idea would be to teach them about the cloud variables, and the possibilities of scratch. Then tell them to pair up and make a game using what they know. Make a studio with all the games and have a fun voting time on who made the best game!

Thank you so very much for your replies,

@AshFur_ Cloud variables: I wasn't even aware of them! The online chat project looks an amazing idea. Tetris is also a very nice idea. @PreoKid if you've got any links to sample puzzle projects, please let me know.

Now I am thinking of it, a studio for such advanced projects is also a nice idea

Happy New Year,

There's a whole collection of them here.
Granted they might not all be the best (I didn't look at all of them ), but there's sure to be some good ones.

Keep in mind that cloud variables can only be used if everyone is at the Scratcher rank (check under their username in the profile pages).
