Don't let people talk about self harm or suicide on Scratch

Every so often you see people who talk about self harm and suicide all the time on scratch. While it's great to have someone to talk to, and there are a lot of people here who would love to help, a lot of people are really upset by the topic and wouldn't expect to see it on a site that is designed to teach kids programming, and kids who are really too young to see that type of thing.

It is an issue that needs discussing, but not on Scratch.

I can't see anything in the community guidelines about it (although it could already be implemented? The guidelines are really vague to be honest).

If this is already implemented, please lock this thread ^^

I think this is covered by a liberal interpretation of “Help keep the site friendly” :-)

Um, that kind of talk, about self-harm, is already prohibited from Scratch as it's very uncomfortable and disturbing. Please report those kinds of comments and stuff.

It is not allowed. I found that out the hard way.

I think this is already implied in the guidelines with “ help keep this site friendly” but I agree that they are fairly vague and leave a broad area for interpretation. They should have a section with things NOT to talk about, like the things you mentioned.

Yeah, the community guidelines need to be a lot clearer. When talking about the rules in suggestions it's hard to know if it's already implemented :'D

Generally they won't give you an alert for reporting stuff like this, even if it's allowed. The next time you see someone talking about it, report it and they'll probably remove it. If they don't, it won't matter since they can see why people would report something like this.

I'm pretty sure that 24 hours hasn't passed yet. Besides, I'm all for making the Community Guidelines clearer; the fact that “Don't talk about suicide” wasn't explicitly mentioned was a major point in the protests to urban a depressed Scratcher who wasn't able to get help from her parents or counselors.

People who post about those are attention seekers. Just ignore them as they are looking for other people's attention to make themselves feel better.

Or they're the sort of people who over-react about everything.

Or maybe they are people who actually suffer from depression. Ever thought of that?

That said, there are better places to get help than on Scratch

I don't exactly agree that we should ban all discussion regarding depression, but I'm not going to argue against Scratch Team's decision. If they don't allow it, so be it.

The more I think about it, I think the rule should boil down to “As a general rule of thumb, Scratch is not the place to conduct these types of discussions. If you'd like to make a project about it, as long as it is respectful, that is fine (although it may be marked NFE). But more generally, if you are depressed, contact professional help”. Don't ban the person – frankly, that would make it worse – but definitely sending a message (both literally and figuratively) would be a good idea.

In any event, this is probably the de facto rule anyway.
