Option to change usernames

I honestly want to change my username or edit it a slight bit and the only way to do that is to get a new account, and I don't want to get a brand new account and start a fresh life all over again.

I propose an option to change usernames. If this is rejected, can I get a reason why this shouldn't be in the options?

No support. The software is not designed to do that, but i support to change usernames only once.

The software architecture isn't designed to handle it. It would also be very confusing to everybody if you did change your username.

I know, but like it would be easier for me to modify my username rather than just making a new account. Maybe there can be like a notification or something, that a Scratcher changed his/her username?

The software architecture is not designed for that. And it woulf be better if we can change our username only once.

Ever since its rejection due to weakly designed software architecture, the ST has made promising improvements to their assets. I would ask that they provide a more recent re-argumentation to reflect the updates they've made. Who knows, maybe someday this will be supported.

Though I still have much doubt about it. Besides architectural reasons, username changing will cause too much confusion. Imagine if a popular Scratcher's name got changed and an impersonator quickly adopted their original name. That is of course, assuming the original name gets replaced. If so, the amount of refactoring across all content would be tremendous (e.g. renaming every link that goes to @username to @username2).

However, another idea lets users make an alias, an alternative name that does not overwrite their original one. The burden of refactoring is minimal, but it requires twice as many lookups (one for original name, another for the alias). A problem arises when linking to an alias. Should @username link to the original username or an alias of someone like @bob123lol? Although I think a good theoretical solution to reducing confusion between original name and alias would be to implement a new sigil-defined link. For example, the short link to a user with an original name would be @username, and the short link to an alias would be #alias (or @@alias or &alias or whatever). Still, some validation is still needed to ensure users cannot have the same alias. But I digress.

Hmm, good point.
I support the following ideas:
•Changing your username only once or twice
•Something like “formerly @DrKat123” on your profile page.

What you could do is put something in your About me like:
Hey! It's SapphireGirl, but you can call me *insert new username here*

What if you could only change a certain amount of characters? Like I want my username to be Rocco32 instead of rocco32. Semi-support, as I know that there will be quite a list of issues if this bill is passed.

Support. Only if you have to wait a certain time like a month to change your username.

^^^What this says. In the future, its always a good idea to read the stickies before posting - they have guidence on what will not be implemented and the reason why.

No I was just making an exaggeration or symbol or something, but I'm just saying I'll just have to start all over again. I don't like that.

Oh ok. a username change would be useful for typos but on other sites when people change usernames or accounts it just confuses me.

Let's overhaul the whole scratch system! If it were based on user ID's, name change wouldn't matter, EX scratch.mit.edu/profiles/ID/#####

I dunno.

This would be a great idea, but as numerous people have said, Scratch isn't built for this. Uhh, I messed up a little and I'm half asleep, so no offense if I've offended.
