Not if you buy it. For example, I know many people who buy a copy of Windows, but download a different copy anyway because it's easier to install. Then they put the product key from the copy they bought.

It's still technically illegal in pretty much everywhere. Perhaps not morally so, but legally.

I've been inclined to thing that it is legal. After all, when it comes to Windows, you're not paying for the actual DVD, you're paying for the product key.

Buying Portal on steam, then pirating it is a different story though.
