whoo new MGMT album

Personally, I'd rather listen to MGMT then play GTA.

It's a nice record. It shows the band leaning into hazier, more dissonant territory. There's no clear “catchy single” here á la “Kids”, “Electric Feel”, or “Time to Pretend”. Some of the tracks are quite sonically expansive, almost sounding like a mini-Animal Collective. It's a pleasant experience, but I feel it's not quite as compelling as it could have been. It could have/should have been something more, something that demands your attention like the best MGMT moments of the past. And while the best songs hint at this, the album's weak points kind of just hang around aimlessly before meandering into the next track. The band has big aspirations – big is an understatement, ‘colossal’ is more accurate – but MGMT hasn't quite yet figured out how to bring these admirably ambitious ideas to a large, effective scale. But overall, it's a worthwhile listen, with some superb tracks, production, and songwriting. I'd give it a 6/10.
