I'm going to FLL! (First LEGO league) Is anyone else going to be in FLL? I know Jakeob is! (Link to his profile.)
http://scratch.mit.edu/users/Jakeob/ I know he is new, but he is my friend IRL.

I think the year before last (2012: Food Factor). I was on the team but dropped out after the second day because it seemed like too much work. It actually was too much work, and by the end of it all the team members were pretty mad at each other. But yeah, those guys are pretty smart. I teamed up with one of them for last year's Robofest and we came 4th (hey, we beat the Koreans! Their robot looked like it could kill me in my sleep. ).WOW! what year? My friends won second place a year or two ago.

No way, New Braunfels? I met a team from there at Michigan (Robofest). Wouldn't be you, would it? I was the crazy guy playing Tetris on his Mac because we had 20 minutes to spare.

I'm not involved in FLL, but I do participate in the next level, First Tech Challenge (FTC) and First Robotics Competition (FRC). Hopefully you take the next steps, the Midwest Regional (FRC competition in Chicago) was a breathtaking experience. We didn't make it to be a captain but we were a high level pick in Alliance Selection. I'm unsure how competition works in FLL though.

The competitions there are a lot more individual as opposed to the head-to-head competition in FRC. You have a game board with Lego set pieces that your robot needs to be able to manipulate in various ways. There are two boards adjacent to each other in each round, but other than the shared setpiece in the middle, the two robots don't really interact. Plus, all of your robot's runs are pre-programmed, and the operators are responsible for setting it up for each run rather than directly controlling it, which makes reliability and efficiency two of the most important factors in a robot. I participated in FLL in elementary and middle school, so I'm glad to see Scratch members taking part as well! My team never made it to nationals, though we were an extremely close second at our state competition in my 5th grade year.
