"Older projects" Carousel

The front page could use a carousel for “Older Projects.” I have already posted this before, but I was ignored, so here is my idea reworded.

The carousel should be at the very bottom of the front page, so new stuff still has top priority. When you load the page, it randomly fill up the carousel with projects over 2 weeks old. The process I suggest is described here.

But wait! The ST is concerned that with “suprise projects,” old inappropriate stuff will pop up! This is probably unavoidable, but really, how old a project is doesn't make it have a better chance of being bad. After all, we have “Recently Shared Projects” that is about the same, except not quite and for brand-new projects. I've seen a couple of inappropriate projects pop up there. Really, older projects might have a lesser chance of showing inappropriate stuff because they may have had more time to filter. And to reduce the chance more, they should make it so if you have been in trouble with the ST for posting bad stuff, your projects are ruled out of the selection.

Please don't kill me for this, it's only an idea, and I don't hate anybody. *deep breath* What if new Scratchers' stuff wasn't eligable? Wait! Put away the pitchforks and torches and listen for a moment! That helps keep people who respawn accounts from getting their innapropriate stuff on the carousel. Okay, you'll probably hate me for this one, and I don't blame you, but it might also maintain a certain quality in what shows up there. It would make room for the better stuff, and make the selection process not have to look at so many projects. Plus getting out of New Scratcher status isn't too hard, and you have a low chance of you stuff showing up here in the first place. I'm done, those were the only reasons I had that particular thought. It isn't a MUST-HAVE, okay? It's only a suggestion.

And by the nature of this carousel, things already on the front page pretty much wouldn't show up here.

What do you think? Is this a terrible idea? Do you want a project you spent a very long time on to disappear after a week? Did I overlook some fatal flaw? Please reply(especially if you are ST) and tell me what you think!

I do like the idea, and yeah I've never really seen the surprise project argument but I suppose it must have some backing.

I would be happy with just a page on Explore that gave random projects

EDIT: Typo.

Maybe change it to 30 days? (since first shared, not since last update)

I've never seen it either. It just popped up in another topic and piqued my interest.

And yes, I dislike how rigid the Explore page is, too. I think the poor thing needs to be entirely redesigned.

BUMP! Anybody there? Want to see your old projects viewed again? This feature would be great for re-discovery!

Well, to be honest, I'm not convinced. Newer projects should always get more priority than older projects—because people care more about what's being made now than what was made a month ago. It's as simple as that. I get what you mean about older projects sometimes being forgotten, but trust me, the best ones aren't (like we don't forget Beethoven's music which was almost 200 years ago). What would make more sense to me would be for you to make a gallery (sorry, studio) of your favorite older projects, and call it the “Scratch Hall of Fame” or something. I would love to take a look and revisit those projects (remember Grapple? SynOS? RHY? ).

I'm not saying remove anything! This would be on the bottom of a page FULL of new stuff. So even if this is added, new stuff still has top priority. Plus, a hall of fame studio is very limited- you only see what people put in there. And it doesn't help if you spent a long time on a project, and after a week or two, nobody sees it.

Again, I'm not against showing new stuff as top priority. In fact, it's good to see brand-new material. The problem is, old stuff is almost completely ignored. Besides, what's wrong with giving older projects a fair chance?

I agree with this. @Hardmath - A project made over a year ago was featured.

Well….a couple of things to consider. We recently changed the Loving row so that it no longer stops looking at projects more than 10 days old - it now will show projects that have received the most new loveits in the last week - but the project can be as older than 10 days (can't recall exactly how old it can be - maybe a month?). Also, we have a quality-screened row for new and old projects already in place - it's the Curated row. Yes, it's missing on this site at the moment - but it will return

That's good, but the curators can only see so much! And with so many requests, you have a very low chance of being picked anyway.

Good luck getting the Curated page to work! And I'm also looking forward to SDS, too. Thanks for replying!

By the way, if you still think this is a bad idea or something, I did say we have “What the community is sharing” that isn't really screened. It's about the same idea in reverse.

This is really cool, especially for people who post and get pushed off really quickly

Maybe it could only work fro projects that the user featured to narrow the list down a bit?

Support. I always thought that older projects are kinda ignored and lost forever.

If you're worried about what might show up then how about this: the row would only contain projects that had previously been on the front page, showing the best from the past. It would work like this: When a project appears on ANY row on the front page (except for SDS and recently added), it gets tagged as being on the front page. The row that I'm suggesting would bring up any project with this “front-page” tag.

Hope you understand…
