OS Discussion Thread

Didn't see an OS discussion in the directory, if there is already one, put it in the directory

Welcome to the OS Discussion thread.

Here we shall dive into the discussions of different types of OS' (OS's?). From Linux, to Windows, to Android (Fun fact: Android is Linux, with modifications, like every other Linux).

Q&A:

Q: What's an OS?

A: An OS, short for Operating System, Is one of the core elements needed for a computer to run like they run, OS's manage the hardware and applications. An example, Windows 10, which might be what a lot of you use.

Q: You said Android is Linux, and that all the Linux's are modified Linux. How many Linux's are there and what example are there?

A: Sources show there are a couple hundred of Linux's (By that I mean Linux Distros). And for the example bit, well here I go:
  • Ubuntu
  • Arch
  • Fedora
  • SUSE
  • Sabayon
Here are what a lot of students and kids might use
  • ChromeOS
  • Andriod

Ask more questions and I will throw them in here.

Moving on, to start of the discussion fill out this.
What OS are you currently using on the computer you are on?
What other OS's do you have on other computers at home (this includes school computers)?
What OS do you like the most of what you use?
What OS do you really want?
Got any facts on an OS?

Before I fill out the form, Fun Fact: We can actually make the Scratch OS wars OS's into real OS's using Linux, kewl right?

Here's what I filled out:
What OS are you currently using on the computer you are on? Windows 10
What other OS's do you have on other computers at home (this includes school computers)? Mac OS, Andriod
What OS do you like the most of what you use? Windows 10
What OS do you really want? Arch Linux or Ubuntu. Once I can, I will make my own Linux Distro (distribution) for my personal needs.
Got any facts on an OS? Linux mascot is a penguin.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux,
is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux.
Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component
of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell
utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day,
without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU
which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are
not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a
part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system
that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run.
The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself;
it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is
normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system
is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux”
distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Anyway, serious post time.

Those aren't “Linuxes” but rather Distribution of Linux. They all run the same kernel (Linux) and are accompanied by the GNU corelibs, but the extra software stack on top is what makes them all unique (and the fact that pacman is best package manager)

Other operating systems that are notable are MS-DOS, CP/M and Unix.

What OS are you currently using on the computer you are on? Windows 10
What other OS's do you have on other computers at home (this includes school computers)? An Arch Install (albeit broken), Android(s), Linux on my 3DS, etc
What OS do you like the most of what you use? I really like my (albeit broken) install of Arch, i3wm is very nice.
What OS do you really want? A working Arch install
Got any facts on an OS? Arch btw

Ye but we refer to it as Linux for short most of the time, since no one is bothered to add GNU.

Valve's Proton works wonders! And a lot of games already support Linux surprisingly. I can't move over because Destiny 2 auto-bans if ran via Proton…

Steam os was based off the Linux Kernel apparently, which is probably why a lot do work, I am pretty sure I can play Rust and Hearts of Iron 4

Edit: Steam OS is based on Debian Linux.

Even better knowing that this is an official Microsoft production (with the help of an animating studio)

Never heard of it before - searched it up and it seems like another one of those security, privacy and testing systems. There's quite a few Linux distributions that are installed with tools specialised for testing of networks or for extra privacy.

One of the newer ones too. I like the desktop background a lot.
