His Dark Materials (The Golden Compass)

Has anyone here read His Dark Materials or seen The Golden Compass?

If so, who are your favourite characters? Which book is your favourite, or what was your favourite part of the books/film? And what do you think you daemon would settle as?

Also, if you've both read the books and seen the film, what did you think of the film?

As for me, my favourite characters are probably Lee (and Hester), Lyra (and Pan) and Iorek (the armoured bear). My favourite book is the first one (Northen Lights/The Golden Compass), and my favourite part is when Lyra tricks the bear king into thinking she's a daemon. I'm not sure what my daemon would be, but I think it would be some sort of cat (as much as I would like it to be a stoat

) because I am independent and a bit like Will. I thought the film was okay and liked seeing all the daemons, but I think they missed a lot out (and there was that ridiculous ending). Hopefully the new BBC series will be better!

So yeah, if anyone else has read HDM or seen The Golden Compass, discuss below!

Yeah, there's really no arguing with that. I'm interested to see how the BBC series they're going to make goes though…

I agree! I kind of wish that the book had gone into more detail about the Intention Craft, because it was quite an interesting idea. And owning one would be so cool! You'd need a daemon to drive it though… I really want a daemon, but then again, who doesn't?

Hello,

I love the series! I've watched the first movie and have the first two books. Addicting to me. Naturally, I found my dæmon would settle as a wolf. Go figure! I believe my favourite character and dæmon pair would have to be Lyra and Pan. They're such a good team in my vision. They're brave, fearless and they never give up is what I most like about them.

But, for dæmons, aren't they able to change their form? Pan changed his form many times in the books to help Lyra in situations and problems they've received. And, for what you've said:

My opinion is that I am on both sides. I believe in reading the book first, (if there is one) and then watching the movie. Sometimes it's just a movie (series) or just a book (series).

My own questions for you:

- What would you demon's name be?
- Characteristics?

My dæmon would be a dirty white wolf, named Kira, a fearless wolf with bright amber eyes. I would change myself to a twelve year old girl named Skye. She has natural brown ombre hear which is what most people would call a medium length. She has brown eyes as well. Her mother died when she was four and her father left on a long trip, leaving her on an adventure, most like Lyra's. Her father though, was a kind, gentle, sweet man who left her in the arms of an old neighbor who tragically died in an accident. Her father got lost, (much like Will's) but, he is soon to be found.

Come to think of it, someone should make a HDM Role Play if it doesn't exist already :O

My own questions for you:

…I actually think about this quite a lot XD

Since I'm pretty reserved and fairly calm, I can somehow imagine my dæmon's personality being really outgoing and energetic in contrast. They'd probably sit on my shoulder in some small form like a bird or stoat (I doubt they'd actually be settled yet, because my personality is still all over the place) and give an ongoing sarcastic commentary as I go through my day. I imagine they'd also nag me to stop procrastinating and get on with my homework

And I have no idea what they'd be called, because I can't name anything

I also found some sort of dæmon website like a year ago that goes into great detail analysing animal behaviours to find your settled form and stuff like that, but I forget the name XD I think I was pretty similar to a sort of cat though…

So, if we made this RP…

- Which world would it be set in? I'm guessing it would be Lyra's world, but maybe you would be able to travel to other worlds by some means? Or would that make it too complicated? XD

- Would everyone be human? That'd probably be best, because then everyone can have dæmons, but I suppose you could also be an ice bear or something…? (And I think a witch would be pretty cool)

- What would the dæmons be? I suppose, if your character is young, your daemon would be unsettled (though may have a preferred form), but if your character is an adult, you'd have to choose a settled form.

And how would we make the character profile thing? Would it just be a comment you have to put in the studio, or will you have to remix a project and fill in stuff about your character? (The latter seems like a better idea, because it seems like it'd be pretty detailed, especially with the dæmons as well XD)

Hmm..

Lyra's world, defiantly and, yes, everyone should be either a human or a witch. I agree with the dæmons as well. For the profiles, people could remix a project of some sort. But, I believe one of the biggest obstacles that will be there is when people sign up, but never roleplay or, everyone just stops and the studio is the kind that is with no one.

I see what you mean, but I suppose you'd hope that if someone took the time to remix and fill in a project, they'd actually join in

I'll try and make that project (and a studio) when I have time, but it'll probably be a while from now because I'm pretty busy at the moment. I'll let you know when it happens (or if I have any more questions)

I love the books! My favorite is The Subtle Knife, but they're all good! I think my daemon would be a ferret or something like that, because I'm like Lyra, and she has one like it. (I think). My favorite character isn't Lyra it's…Pantalaimon, her daemon!

Aw, I love Pantalaimon too! I think it was a pine marten that he settled as :P (which is close enough to a ferret I suppose XD)

Suuup fellas. Big fan of the series, and an editor on the wiki. I've got an alt dedicated to the series called @Will_Parry but I'll share some stuff here anyway. My daemon's a rabbit easily. My favourite character's Will and I didn't mind the film, it's just the plot got mixed up and the script wasn't all that great. The Subtle Knife was my favourite book, and the Amber Spyglass would've been if i could've survived the ending. A year on and I'm still not over it. My favourite part was when they rescued all the kids in Northern Lights. Also Billy Costa is such a lad
