Pokemon Land and Sea Versions Official Thread

I have to say, any pokemon project gets me really excited. But as a maker of one myself, I have to tell you some of the harsh realities that may stop this from being finished.
Coding needs to be your main priority. SO MANY PEOPLE forget this. If you spend too much time on sprites, you may end up with a game that looks great, but is small and buggy.
Scratch lags. No way. You never noticed that did you(?) My point being, my demo for my pokemon styled game is a little bit laggy. It's not destructive and unplayable, but it's not smooth either. And I have spent A LOT of time advancing my battle system. My current (unshared) development version lags quite a lot. So, my words of wisdom to you - Ditch scrolling. Trust me - it's for the best. Try not to use cloning much. It's very intensive.
Scratch games have file size limitations. So you may have to cut down on music.
Sprites with 50+ costumes start to lag a bit. If you're planning to make a good battle system, you'll want just one sprite for your pokemon and one for your opponent. That means all of your pokemon's costumes have to be in one sprite. So try to have as little as needed (preferably one per pokemon).
Lists are your friends. Seriously though, mass data storage requires lists. The less lists you use the better, as lots of lists means lots of lag. So try to keep as much data as you can in one list.
Making new animations is a pain. It just is. And it's costume and clone heavy. Try to re-use animations. It won't look as good, but it will be worth the time and effort saved and the speed of your game.
You need a theme. Try to not be stupid like me and pick genocide. Scratch admins won't like that. Personally, I think my storyline is very good, but it's not ideal for the younger users of scratch.
I'm not trying to destroy your game, I'm just warning you. I think that this game has great potential. You just need to not be too ambitious. It may result in the game being stopped altogether. Don't let this end up like super mario galaxy 2.5 did. Just do your best. I hope all goes well
~JABrules~

Edit: Can you show me your battle system? I can help improve it if you have issues.

Those sentences seem to contradict each other?

Doing that already

TBD after coding is done, hopefully

That's what idea makers are for - Give ideas and programmers make them.

Also, should we show this to game freak when we are done? Maybe they'll like it…

NO, WE HAVE STATED THE IF WE EVER DO THAT THEN THE ENTIRE THING WILL BE DESTROYED. They will hit us with a copyright claim and we will be able to do nothing to stop it.

I think Pokémon Evoas did that.

Never heard of it?
Copyright claim.

Lol, you're all arguing as if Ganefreak would ever see this. Its amusing.

Well, poverty is an interesting theme. How does that translate to Pokemon without it just being every town being poor?

The original theme was saving the world from destruction, as the current story says that evil Team Chaos was trying to revive Landreas so you revive serpencia and cause them to fight and destroy the world like they almost did thousands of years ago.

Edit: full story:

SurfingPicachuGames wrote:

I have some ideas for the story.
I made it small cause its kinda long.

Also here's the original prologue to help understand the story
“Eventually the Land Version Mascot saw the light and ventured out, taking heat with it. Seas started to evaporate. The Sea Version Mascot noticed this and went to where the Land Version mascot was. The heat touched the Sea Version mascot's skin, angering the Sea Version mascot as well. They clashed in tough attacks, the Sea Version mascot flooding the land, the Land Version mascot filling in the seas. The Pokemon World became distorted and it went through years of being covered in water, to going through worldly droughts. Of course, no ordinary being could survive and species became wiped out. Seeing what they had done, they stopped fighting. The two mascots worked together to fix what they had done wrong, first fixing the World's seas and landmass, then recreating the Pokemon that had been wiped out. The Land Version mascot created and colored the bodies and the Sea Version mascot breathed feelings and emotion to them. With the help of other Legendary Pokemon, like Mew putting DNA into them and the Lake Trio helping with advanced emotions, the World was as it was before. Exhausted, the creatures fell asleep, knowing that if they fought again, the World
would never be the same.”

Your Mom was a famous Pokemon professor(also the professor in the game.) She researches Pokemon evolution, specifically the energy that emits from it. She made some important progress on it, but here research is stolen by team Chaos to help them in the resurrection of the land/sea Pokemon. In order to recruit more members, they entice them with the prospect of making money by stealing and selling badges(like in the original story). The team leader, talkingtoilet8, is able to resurrect Landreas in Pokemon sea version, and sperpencia in pokemon land version. A mysterious man named (blank) persuades you into resurrecting serpencia/landreas. but it turns out that the mysterious man works with the team leader who is trying to cause the same conflict that happened long ago in order to “Restart” the world with him as leader. But you end up defeating him and he disbands the team and disappears. And the mysterious guy turns out to be your father, proffesor Baobab, who vanished years ago!

So a little tldr for those who didn't read(plus some extra stuff)

-Your mom is the professor
-her evolution energy research is stolen by the evil team chaos to resurrect land/sea legendaries
-The team is at first a team of badge thieves
-The team leader resurrects the legendary land/sea pokemon(depends on the version of the game)
-You resurrect the legendary land/sea pokemon(depends on the version of the game) because of some guy who is working for the evil team
-team leader wants to “Restart” the world in his image(basically have the land/sea pokemon fight it out so the screw up the world again)
-You win and the team leader disappear
-Mysterious guy is your father

Hit for copyright on an open-source fan-remake Scratch website?
I doubt it.
It's not out for profit or are we taking their stuff, just the idea so it doesn't really matter.
We're just in it for the Scratch Community but idea makers? Anything?
Please review our work in the studio, my version as well as toilets, turkey3, and the rest of his team (i forget :p ) and tell us what we need to do now and if any changes need to be made

*cough* pacman *cough*
Perhaps the theme could be saving the world from poverty? Something like that would be extremely useful, it's being done in places like Africa.

@all
Right now it seems we're discussing a lot of things and I guess that's fine but I'd like to keep working on the project and stuff.
Here are my responses:
I don't know if poverty would be an appropriate theme. First of all, people may find it offensive even if we don't; secondly, you can't really emphasize that in a positive way and incorporate it into the storyline.
Now keep in mind, that there are often two themes: one related to Pokemon and one not; the Professor often studies one thing (like eggs, which were introduced in Gen II and studied by Professor Birch, or friendship, such as in HGSS where your Pokemon walked behind you), and the storyline revolves around another: for example, balance in Hoenn or Sinnoh-balance between the land and sea and between the real and Distortion world.

That being said, there are some other ideas I have, and I'd like some opinions about them.
Dreams vs. Aspirations: Perhaps we could incorporate some parts of the storyline that involve dreams (what you see when you sleep) that intertwine with reality, and aspirations that conflict with dreams or something?
Depth and perception: Maybe throughout the game, there'll be different “ways” of seeing things, (this sounds complicated, idk) and there's a difference between what others see and what you see?
Privacy: I don't know how this theme would work but?

Of course, if you guys can figure out how to do poverty well (without being offensive and whatnot) then go ahead. Or if you think of more, suggest them. (Also the original theme of “saving the world from destruction” sounds kinda familiar, doesn't it? (maybe because it's been in like every game))

Another thing: with the Gamefreak thing: If we ever do finish our game, I suggest we not show it to Gamefreak (if we make it well enough, they'll find out about it themselves) but I don't see a point in showing them really, especially since we risk having it taken down like the Pacman project. Like it's a small chance but anything's possible and you don't want to risk wasting all our work so…

@spriters
I'd like the spriters to talk somewhere preferably separately and discuss who should be head spriter. All that person does is manages spriters, assign tasks, checks for quality, and reports to me on progress. Head spriter doesn't make everything, doesn't control everything, etc. I'd like it somewhere else so it doesn't get tangled up with our current general discussions, if possible.

@programmers
I'd also like a Head programmer because I have no idea where the progress is, and each time someone says, it's either wrong because the progress has changed (like you've done more since then) or because you have the wrong version, etc. so I'd like just one person to be in charge of telling me all the progress. Therefore, this person should be on track of all the new project versions, etc. Please choose a Head programmer amongst yourselves, preferably somewhere else as well, as we already have a lot going on in this thread.

@mappers
Hm it seems like they're all gone for school or w/e, so if you're a mapper and you have time to make maps and whatever, just post letting me know so I can assign you something.

@trioteam
Feel free to use this. If you want. It's not required.

@mitchboy and SPG
I don't know what happened to our discussion about conflicts with the world map and route 1 map, but what do you guys want to do to resolve that?

I don't think we should use the poverty idea doesn't really seem appropriate.
We should come up with something new for Africa, and programmers come on, what's next? Toilet?

@all-Guys, this copyright thing is serious. We could be in a lot of trouble. Look at Pokemon Omega. It was an MMO game that was fine for a while. Then Pokemon got a lawyer to take down the site because Nintendo's Omega Ruby site was not first when googled, but second, and the name was too close to Omega Ruby. And they also made a Mystery dungeon game Called Land and Sea. We may even need to change the game's name!
PLEASE consider this, because if we work very hard and finally finish the game, and then Nintendo shuts it down, all of the work that we put in to this game will be for not.
Thank you all,
Trioteam

Nintendo can't shut it down, they did not make the game. Game Freak did.

Edit:

If we need to change our name why don't we use some randomizer?

And, the collab is going slow from school.
