the underworld's meticulous keeper/fear of fate -- hydrangeakit application

the underworld's meticulous keeper/fear of fate – hydrangeakit application ✦

“Hydrangeakit. Who's that again? Oh yeah, the quietest loud kit! Or is it the loudest quiet kit. Oh wait, they don't like labels. Sorry. Welp, anyways, knowing her, he's trying to change the course of something minutes before it happens. Look! It's right over there, rambling her head off about something they don't like.” - random RC queen probably

✦ ———————————————————— ✦
Well, anyways, that random RiverClan queen doesn't need to worry. Angia is in my arms right now. I hold them like a little floofy burger. All shenanigans and tomfoolery aside, welcome to my Hydrangeakit application, titled “The Underworld's Meticulous Keeper, or, Fear of Fate” Quick content warning for character death, depictions of fear, and possibly scary medical descriptions of Hijack's folded ear and dwarfism. And without further ado, let's begin!!

ii. ABOUT THE ROLEPLAYER

✦ username
My username is @tippy-tappy-toez / @.tippy-tappy-toez. My other non-roleplay accounts include @bravadont / @.bravadont and @fritterpawz / @.fritterpawz.

✦ nickname + pronouns
I go by Constel, Peryton, or Bree in order of preference. My pronouns are he/they/fen/it/eyes/mirror pronouns.

✦ about you

Salutations!! I'm Constel, and I'm a silly shenanigan-having nerd who loves cartoons and writing. I'm between the ages of ten and fourteen and in the annoying and terrible land that is middle school. Outside of that, though, I'm a total bookworm with a liking for young adult queer romance novels with slight magical influence, without it being full-on fantasy, though fantasy is pretty great too. I also am a longtime enjoyer of xenofiction from Scary Stories For Young Foxes to Warrior Cats to Wings of Fire. As I mentioned, cartoons are something I also take a liking to, like ToH, Amphibia, SPOP, DE : PP, and Steven Universe, to name quite a few. Adding on to my ginormous pile of interests, I love musical theater despite my school's theater club not having any money. I'm especially a fan of Ride The Cyclone.

While all that stuff isn't filling up all my time, I just so happen to be a yellow belt in kenpo karate and kickboxing, and a third violin in my local middle school orchestra which just had its concert on the sixteenth. It's not very time-consuming, so I'm quite active on here. I'm also a contributor on genius.com because I like talking about music, and an avid Flight Rising player in the nature flight. If you know me, you may see me as overachieving, tenacious, chaotic, and maybe a little awkward, but I try to be friendly and supportive of others. Thanks for giving me the chance to apply!!

Questions about roleplaying

✦ activity level
My activity is quite odd, as I log onto Scratch for several hours per day, but my motivation is selective so I don't know how frequently I will reply to roleplays. I am always open for discussion of OORP dynamics, though. I try to keep anywhere from 2-5 roleplay threads going at a time. If I don't reply within 3 days, I can be pinged. Overall, on weekdays, I have about 6.5/10 activity, and on weekends about 8/10.

✦ longevity
For characters I own, I tend to get attached heavily to them and come up with long plotlines, and try to form meaningful connections between my characters and others, and they have to be alive to do that. My most plot-heavy character so far, Heritagepride, has lived 40 moons and is still going on strong, so I forsee that, unless something goes really wrong, I will likely keep Drea for at the bare minimum that long, but hopefully longer than fifty moons.

✦ roleplaying experience

In terms of experience with roleplays, though I'm mostly just in TFC as of recent, that isn't all. My first RP on Scratch is something I forget the name of, but I joined in September or October of 2022, and I had the ambitious cat known as Foxglovestem(?). Soon after, I joined many smaller roleplays which all died out in time, with the most memorable being Recovery (in which I had Mintygaze), Forbidden Forest (where I had an adorable gullible baby named Loaf who ended up joining that roleplay's version of BloodClan and being renamed Lash), and this one WoF roleplay that I used my personal OC, Preserve, in. In January of 2023, I joined Generations RP with Mushroomspore, and that was the real turning point where I “learned how to roleplay”, so to speak, making my writing voice mimic that of the characters, especially so with my second Gens character, Shardglass, who lived from March-April to July or August. I joined TFC in February of 2023, but my character, Brightenedgaze, was the average sign-up character which is to say not a lot of interactions, and, of course, a generic personality. I was more invested in Generations at that point, so I failed to keep up with the ever-dramatic politics of TFC ShadowClan. In July, Heritagepride was found and Brightenedgaze was killed off. I have also, at different points in time, hosted some RPs, including my current project, ETSRP. In February of this year, my second-slot character, Monarch was born. And that's where we are now.

✦ character history (tfcrp, and if you have none, others)

WOOHOO time to ramble about my TFC characters a bit more!! First of all, Brightenedgaze of ShadowClan. His sign up got accepted on my birthday of 2023, back in February. Like I said, they were pretty basic with only one real connection being in Aspencarol of the same clan – who I believe is still alive. It was hard to stay active when I had greater focus on other roleplays, and, not having made very established lore for Bri, I was feeling moderately lost. I applied for one litter in spring of 2023, and I didn't get the kit, but in June I applied for Heritagekit.

Heir is for sure my most developed character. I'm capable of writing several paragraphs about Eri and her connections to others and the world, but I'll simplify it. I won aer in late June, and he was found in mid July alongside her sibling Legacykit. The two were feeling sort of lost, since they were taken into a new place by a complete stranger. At five moons, the kits' parent, Geodecrackle, ran away on a boat, which sparked a whole arc for Heri. She didn't feel at home in RiverClan, so as soon as ae were apprenticed, he ran. Living in the EotF for two-ish moons, she made a friend who was a loner named Esperanza. Later, they would become a ship. When Heritagepaw returned to RC, he came out as nonbinary to her brother, Legacypaw. He was sort of confused about what home meant until ae were a warrior, receiving the name of Heritagepride and defining home for herself. Eventful things that happened in his warriorhood are getting attacked by a hawk and acquiring cool scars, Esperanza dying and causing another Heri arc to heal from that, and most recently, Pri adopting two kits: Hopekit and Venturekit.

My most recent charrie is six-seven moons as of writing this, and he is Monarch. He's pretty cynical and judgmental but also verbose and flexible. He just began existing in early March, so there's not much plot but so far, he has been born to Luna of the loners alongside his brother Jasmine, and recently he began his mother's impromptu training program called the “learny journey” where he is going through something similar to an apprenticeship.

✦ how often do you harm your characters?
I only apply injury to my characters when there is a lack of plot, and even then it's not big. Keeping this part short because the Forums don't like me talking about hurting fictitious beings. I like developing characters organically from RP threads, not from some forced plotline. Injury plot isn't my favorite kind to write, and there are only so many ways you can go with it.

✦ how involved are you in your character's lives?

This is difficult to measure, but I'll do my best. I not only try to find connections for my characters and interact with others in and out their residences, but I do a lot of art of characters I own, sometimes based off of different threads. Sometimes I ask too many people to roleplay, though, and can become swamped. I usually draw my own refs for them whenever their refs are outdated, unless I am unable to draw at a certain moment in time. I also try my best to start a roleplay thread with someone every week/moon, though it may take a few weeks to finish up and I'm honestly not the best at finishing threads. Fortunately, I'm quite active and willing to imagine OORP interactions. I also write SRPs for most important events and reactions to things like deaths, plot development, and ceremonies.

about hydrangea

iii. ABOUT HYDRANGEA

✦ what kit are you applying for (only one but yknow)

As it has already been made clear in the title of this application and throughout my rambling, I'm applying for the amazing Hydrangeakit!!

✦ why are you applying for this kit?
With Angia's captivating and adorable design, how could I not. I had the perfect personality idea for her, and it fits so so well and, practically, I'm obsessed. While killing off Heritagepride isn't something I'm exactly eager to do, I sometimes go weeks without responding to roleplays and she hasn't had any self-rps in two months or so. Once, I forgot I was his roleplayer. Aer brother's roleplayer is leaving Scratch, I believe, and is inactive. Pri has made lots of connections and friends in his life, but only one or two really stuck and motivation with her is hard. Besides kits, none of his plot excites me these days, and even now all I fill my roleplay responses with is references to his past lore, because nothing's going on right now. I love Eri so so much, but I feel like time is moving so fast these days and I can't make excuses for being semi-inactive with Eri. As I mentioned, the connections I roleplayed the most while she was younger are now inactive, and that unmotivates me. I log onto Scratch daily, and I want a new character to connect to. I have Monarch, too, but he still has ways to go. And if I win Hyde, then I get a chance to look at RiverClan with fresh eyes. A personality waiting to be developed and friends to be made, plus a beautiful Rue design that will continue the trend of my TFC charries having below average height and only one parent and warm-colored eyes, what isn't there to love?

✦ why should you win?
I'm not the best at seeing what other people consider beneficial, especially in terms of silly internet battle kitties. But instead of starting with that, I'm going to try to be confident in my abilities for a moment!! I think I should win because I'm learning. I'm still getting experience, and balancing that with having fun. I'll learn as I go. I might take breaks, but that's fine if I remember to have fun the whole time. I'm also an artist, and although I'm not on the TFC chaos, I know a lot of TFCRP members, particularly the ones in The Haven. TL;DR, I'm pretty commited while also learning, and able to be in the community. I'm very active, and try to not only come up with, but implement, unique ideas, arcs, and concepts to make roleplaying with me and my characters more interesting.

✦ final gender + sexuality

In the future, Hydrangea will be completely unlabeled, starting to use any pronouns at a young age (which I refer to him with in the context of this application) and having attraction to she-cats only, with both romantic and intimate attraction fluctuating. If Gia chose to label themselves, it'd be as aroflux, aceflux, and genderqueer. But as you'll learn, Angi hates labels.

✦ simplified + detailed personality
Simplified:
+ positive + confident, outspoken, calculated, balanced, respectable, independent
= neutral = social, complex. snarky, intimidating, straightforward, unpredictable
- negative - stubborn, reckless, easily upset, hotheaded, unapproachable, distant

Detailed:

Welcome to the mind of a meticulous and floral jackal with a stare into the infinite void, gardens of ever-changing darkness guarding gates to something deeper, to a land of infinity and unpredictability, paradoxes and galleries of keys. Forces, changing and unchanging and trying their hardest to change. The swingset you see, out of place but somehow perfectly in place in front of the river Styx where you will travel through her psyche. Because your subject, the cat you are studying, is the keeper of the underworld. A jackal who can scare, who can give chase, but, odd for a cat with this (metaphorical) job, fate paralyzes him in their footsteps. There is nothing predetermined about life to Hyda. She wants to be in control – they're serious about it. Finality scares this cat. Welcome to Hydrangeakit's masterful brain.

You toss your money into the water, hearing the tales that they call out about her. The Jackal. Angia. Hydrangeakit. When they walk, it's a confident stride. Paw after paw onto the sands of self-worth, collecting all the shells that lay there, all the sand dollars. Tail held high or sweeping the ground in a proud swish. They know what's good about him. She admires how she doesn't let anything go unquestioned. He knows that how others feel doesn't matter. She doesn't get into his head about it, either. They have much more important things to worry about.

Speaking of which, Hydrangeakit speaks of things a lot. It's important for him to be educated and work to form an opinion. Even when others don't agree, she sees nothing wrong with what ensues because of it. Argument is a path to challenge the norm, not to consensus, and that's completely okay for the challenger, the guard, the cat of short stature who never lets anything go past without a challenge. Outspoken, challenging what is known, because who knows why they believe that if nobody asks? Because is the known that good anyways?

Not if you're too busy calculating unknowns, like Angia spends her time doing. Calculating everything, really. Calculating how not to be predicted – bring a shock or a raised eyebrow to the unsuspecting, unexpecting felines. Calculating what are the cracks in some argument – not to take it down, but to fix it (as it's usually his own), using that little brain of hers to be calculated. To calculate their impulses, not the consequences of them in this piece, but what they'd achieve.

And what she wants to achieve: well, work. And fun. The both can coexist, and the blueberry-and-golden tortie is proof of that matter. She'll work hard – surely pretty serious in his own right – but can bring some shenanigans if the moment calls. They focus on the things she dreams of, never losing sight of those, You can't do your best without rest – though he says “you can't do your best without a bit of care towards yourself”. Working hard but staying balanced means a break or two is in store at some point.

But one thing Angia doesn't take a break from is being respectable and respected. If other cats deserve respect, and he treats them with it – plus the pooled amber stare that always seems to be looking at you, searching for the falters in your sight, unbreaking – she can usually dredge it up with their gaze and the way he questions everything, no matter how sure you are of it. This can get Hydra the answers and uplifting she needs, It is few and far between that there is a cat who talks down to Jackal, so Jack in return won't talk down to any of them. That's how it goes.

And there's always shoulder space between Angie and others. Not because of Drain's short stature or any sort of antisocial nature, but because they prefer to walk off of the beaten path on his own. Under anyone else's gaze, she has to stand up straight and look them in the eyes. But when it's just Angie, it's just his wild eyes, just her fear, just their confident thoughts filling the air. So, Hydie is independent. Fitting for such a cat to work alone.

Though his work is done alone, their play is achieved surrounded by others. Other cats are interesting, and having friends means having the support of like-minded cats, so Hydra is also quite a social feline, approaching with greetings and swishes of her long tail and a stare sparking casual conversation. One thing Angia pursues knowledge about is other cats, how and why they do what they do and if they are as dead set pursuing the same thing that the Jackal himself does. No fated encounters here, Hydrangeakit makes it happen all by herself.

Lets get one thing straight. Hydrangeakit is a very, very complex feline, not a smooth surface to behold but facets inside of facets inside of facets. You know when a mirror is reflecting another mirror, which is reflecting the first mirror? Kind of like that, but each mirror contains fragments of Hydie's whole story. There isn't one word that could begin to describe him alone. On the outside, she is a debater who doesn't let anything go by, a cat who's wild eyes command respect and conversation. Inside, they ponder and calculate in order to take a short path somewhere, but a path nobody else has seen, if very few. Under it all, under exterior and interior, they fear a smooth path that is already decided where cats are presented with only the illusion of a choice.

One of said facets, one that hasn't been explored yet, is Hydie's sarcastic sense of humor. In order to do what is expected of absolutely nobody, in order to sidestep fate, he will come out sometimes with a snarky exterior. It may be funny to some who are fine with playful bullying – she only does this to cats who are in the least acquainted with him – but sometimes it can be off-putting. Angia may not even realize she does it, really. It's just one of many things he does in order to move through life a paradox.

When Gia takes or blazes a path, it's one without any unnecessary turns, twists, or stops along the road. Though he travels off the beaten path in every walk of life, the untreaded lands will be a shortcut or an average-amount-of-length-cut, which is to say that Hydie is very straightforward. Within the first three minutes of hearing an argument (that he's usually the one supervising), it is possible for them to come to a conclusion about it's strengths and weaknesses, the pros and cons. Nobody has all the time in the world, so So, Hydrangeakit blazes forward at maximum potential, not wasting any time for caveats.

As it's been previewed many times before – intentionally, as this is a large facet of both Angia's interior and exterior, Hydrangeakit doesn't let her thoughts, feelings, or actions be predicted by any, if very few. Stars in his eyes at small delights, but not letting big changes phase them – just one example of his turning heel-face-turn around when she sees that tunnel that he's supposedly set on turning away from the expected.

Because of her fear, Because of her always-challenging persona, it's a fun challenge (in his opinion) if he doesn't budge. Secretly, she's either considering every word or already done with your *, but it's hard to acquire the former if it's Hydra himself exhibiting said stubbornness. She wouldn't challenge their own actions, would she? Nope. Unless he's out, changing people's minds, they'll try to change something until it happens.

And while trying to change the course of events, they are careful to be constantly reckless and charge her way through. It's the only way to change it in time before fate wins again. It's how she gets so much done. Sometimes – most times, in fact – he'll end up hurt because of it. It could possibly be un-worth it and end up with hard feelings as opposed to answers. Still, her aforementioned stubborn interior makes it so they make the same mistake in this case way more than once.

And this mistake, as well as others, are some things that Angie is serious about. This isn't just kit's play for him. It's one of their two causes that meld into one someday down the path – challenging everything and challenging fate. This means that when something is failed, then it has failed. Fate has won. Because of this, Angia may come off as easily upset, treating things that may not seem to be failures to anyone else as a big deal.

Besides being upset, he can also feel other emotions when fate takes the win. When destiny gets in the way. Also a debater, it's easy for her to get caught up in the fiery spirit of argument, even if it's for a good purpose. This causes her to also be quite hotheaded, getting quick-tempered when in a defense of something, which can cause the wild-eyed Jackal to respond with anger that can take over his goals and make the already quite intimidating cat even more scary.

Speaking of which, the way she holds himself, loud but confined, stiff but wild, absurdist but serious but knowing when to take a break, all of this can make her seem like someone isolated, not to be tampered with, not to perhaps interrupt the threads of the delicate path it's so essential for Hydey to build. No, they wouldn't dare approach a cat focused on doing everything he can for a goal below the interior and the exterior, all the way to Angie's underworld where nobody can see what's happening but everyone can see what it causes – a cat focused and calculated and challenging and unapproachable.

And with Hydie's goals, they can actually isolate Angia from other cats. Hydie is an odd one – less common ground with others sprouting from the fact that Gia has made an enemy with infinity, a force deciding where and when they come into play from the moment they appear into the world, something that other felines have no issue with. The short rosetted tortoiseshell will never be one to just wait and see, so having everyone be fine with it all day and night forever and ever makes Hijack feel sort of left out, sort of distant, to have absolutely nobody share the same.

Mostly, what is beneath all of the facets is the underworld. Their driving force. The things left unchanging no matter what's happening. What Angia is built around. The core, the foundation. The overworld wouldn't be called that if there was nothing beneath. Ange, when you crack off all those facets to find the central geode, one that has been hinted for the whole time because you can't see Angia without seeing what's under, the motivator. The fear of fate. It makes Angie feel helpless if everything has been decided, that some force knew his decisions before they were even presented. When the world turns, it's got to be under Angie's own paws, bad decisions are made because Hydie's the one who makes them. Bad decisions may hurt but they're proof that fate is weak under Hydrangea's gaze.

You are at the underworld now, your destination, a place you have learned about. You haven't come in contact with the greeter of the place yet, but you know more about them than the average cat does. His fears and how they make her goals, how she wants to have their survival be her choice. Chekov's swing from your entry isn't here and isn't important. It was never planned to be, but by the time Angia arrives, it will be.

✦ research (with liable links, and how it will affect them)
link one - dwarfism | link two - dwarfism | link three - dwarfism

what is it?
Dwarfism is a hormonal disorder which causes cats to grow and develop more slowly, having physical effects. Depending on the type of dwarfism, it may have side effects such as a smaller jaw, bowed legs/bowed posture, joint pain, and lethargy, illnesses like heart problems, and a decreased lifespan. The three types are proportional dwarfism, disproportional dwarfism, and selective dwarfism. The first means that although the hormones are produced atypically, the cat has similar physical proportions to a non-dwarf feline, just at a smaller scale, the hormonal abnormalities affecting all of the cat's body in equal amounts. The second is sort of self-explanatory, different parts of the cat being affected at different amounts by the pituitary imbalance. Selective dwarfism involves the short legs of a normal dwarf feline but fewer of the side affects. This is pretty uncommon in nonpedigree cats.

how is it caused?
Dwarfism is a dominant genetic condition, which means only one parent has to have it for it to the condition to be passed down to a majority of the kits. In a cat, it is caused by the incomplete generation of a pituitary gland, which produces growth hormones and develops in the wound, and it is underdeveloped then or later by disease or tumors in some locations if the cat is effected by dwarfism. The condition that causes specific types of dwarfism is called osteochondrodysplasia, specifically achondrosplasia.

what are the general symptoms?
Symptoms vary, but they involve a larger head and shorter legs, a spine that leans to one side, and bowed front legs – potentially longer than the hind ones. As well as this, cats with disproportional dwarfism particularly can have greater concerns such as a smaller jaw, crooked or no teeth, arthritis and weight gain. They will also retain weaker teeth, downy fur with no guard hairs, and perhaps even mentally develop more slowly than littermates during kithood. Dwarf cats also deal with shortened lifespans of twelve to fifteen years in captivity.

how does it affect hydrangeakit?
Angie will have more difficulty reaching high-up places and will have to look up to properly talk with cats only a few moons older than him. It will also cause her to have an uncomfortable and bow-legged gait and trip frequently when running, though fast-walking is fine for her if they take big steps as not to trip over their shorter, wider legs and bigger paws. He will also struggle jumping over objects higher than about three inches, and will have to take multiple hops to get over things, climb, or go around. They will also have weaker jaw strength and teeth, taking longer to eat than others. Additionally, he will be susceptible to leg pains/easier muscle strains due to the larger strain on their front legs.

when will it affect hydrangeakit?
Angie will begin showing traits of dwarfism at about two moons as they are growing up, he will fall behind Lovebirdkit in terms of development. In apprenticeship this will escalate as she will only grow a few inches from kithood, and seems more physically clumsy, though she will not allow that to stop him as she will still walk with a confident gait.

Thanks to the roleplayers of Tsvitochik and Darlingdahila, Peony and Autumn respectively, for detailing their experiences roleplaying cats with dwarfism in TFC to help me out.

link one - osteochondrodysplasia | link two - osteochondrodysplasia | link three - osteochondrodysplasia

what is it?
Osteochondrodysplasia causes cats to have folded ears, particularly of the Scottish fold breed. It is a condition that affects the cartilage in cats. It may have side affects, though, such as kidney problems, bone and joint deformities, and behavioral changes. It is a type of osteochondrodysplasia, the broad group of feline disorders characterized by irregular formation and development of bone and cartilage.

how is it caused?
Folded ears are usually in purebred cats, and they are caused by a dominant gene that is a genetic mutation in the Scottish Fold breed, causing the ear pinna to be folded and having complications alongside this main or desirable effect. It is a dominant gene, so only one parent needs to have it for it to be passed down. Cats with both parents having folded ears are more likely to have a higher severity of complications than felines with only one copy of the genome.

what are the general symptoms?
Besides the characteristic folding of ear cartilage, cats with varying levels of osteochondrodysplasia can have varying symptoms, but the most common include thicker and more stiff tails, small or misshapen toes, less capability of jumping or reluctance to do so, and, in some cases of purebred Scottish Folds, bone formations around their paws or malformed limbs.

how does it affect hydrangeakit?
Because of their folded ear, Hydrangeakit may have to tilt his head to hear things from the fold-eared side. Since Angia isn't a purebred Scottish Fold, the secondary effects that aren't shared with her dwarfism won't happen as severely. Despite this, Angie will have slightly smaller paw pads than the average cat (despite the larger paws), and a less articulate tail.

when will it affect hydrangeakit?
The onset of this condition will begin at three weeks, when their ear will start to curl in on itself while other cats' ears would have already opened.
