Paris, France. April 15th, 2019. At 6:20 PM local time, fire alarms rang in the Notre Dame Cathedral for the first time, and though there appeared to be nothing wrong, the building was evacuated. 43 minutes later, the alarm rang again--and this time the fire was noticed.
A gasp arose from the watching crowd of tourists and Parisians gasped as the 856-year-old cathedral's iconic spire toppled into the flames.
For 856 years, this magnificent medieval wonder has stood tall. It has survived both World Wars, and a number of other things.
But its interior is largely constructed of wood, and all it took was a fire to severely damage this structure, of both historical and religious value.

Authorities say it will take 15 to 20 years to rebuild the cathedral, but Macron, president of France, wants the cathedral rebuilt in 5 years.
