READ THIS OR YOU CAN'T JOIN ➳ “A long, long time ago, before cats walked the earth, a deep canyon fell and crumbled into tiny pieces, scattering millions of rocks across the darkness of the sky. Each of those pieces contains the spirit of a cat, and if you are good, one day your spirit will join them.” Briarkit leaned against her mother’s hind leg, listening to the story she had heard so many times before. Beside, her brother, Redkit, stretched, battering his paws against the rocky walls of the den. He was always restless when the weather trapped them inside. “If you look carefully at the sky,” Briarkit’s mother continued, “you can see a pattern of stars in the shape of the Great Cat, Kallik. She is running around and around the pathway star.” “Why is she running?” Briarkit chipped in. She knew the answer, but this was the part of the story where she always asked. “Because it is green-leaf and she is hunting. With her quick and powerful claws, she hunts mice and bird. She is the greatest of all hunters in Starclan.” Briarkit loved hearing about Kallik’s strength. “But when the weather becomes cold,” Her mother said in a hushed voice. “And she can’t hunt anymore..” Her mother paused before continuing. “She gets hungrier and hungrier, but she has to keep running because three hunters pursue her, Coyote, Fox, and Badger. They run for many moons, all through the frosty days, until the end of leaf-bare. Then, as the cold begins to leave the earth, they finally catch up to her. They gather around her to strike the fatal blow with their sharp fangs and talons. The heart’s blood of the Great Cat falls to the ground, and everywhere it falls. Some of it lands on Fox, which makes his fur red.” “Does the great cat die?” Briarkit breathed. “She does,” Her mother replied. Briarkit shivered. Every time she heard this story it frightened her all over again. Her mother went on. “But when Green-leaf returns, bringing back the trees and grass, Kallik is reborn and the hunt begins all over again, season after season.” Briarkit snuggled into her mother's soft white fur. The walls of the den curved up around them, making a sheltering cave of rock that Briarkit could barely glimpse in the dark, although it was only a few paw-lengths away from her nose. Outside a fierce wind howled across the ground, sending freezing raindrops through the mouth of the den. Briarkit was glad they didn't have to be out there tonight. Inside the den, she and her brother were warm and safe. Briarkit wondered if Kallik had ever had a mother or brother, or a den where she could hide from the storms. If the Great Cat had a family to keep her safe, maybe she wouldn't have to run from the hunters. (Secret codeword: Rose) Briarkit knew her mother would always protect her from anything scary until she was big enough and strong enough and smart enough to protect herself. Briarkit yawned and snuggled up next to her mother. Her brother's ears perked up suddenly, the way they always did when he heard something. "What is it?" Their mother asked softly. Redkit turned to face her. "Someone is coming," He said in alarm. "Someone big, and scary." Briarkit pushed closer against her mother. She could her paw-steps outside the den. Wincing, she felt the fur on her spine bristle. "Go!" A voice called. "The great flood is coming!"
