So. If you read the prologue you were probably like, why are there 4 flipping medicine cats? Well look, we'll get to that in a second. Let us begin!
~Leader-to-deputy system is basically the same, though the leader has a whole month to choose the deputy. If something happens to them before they pick a deputy, the Clan will vote on the new leader who must then quickly pick a deputy and announce it the next day at sunrise.
~The big question everyone's probably wondering- why so many medicine cats? Well, first of all, their Clan is large enough to have about 5 cats in the medicine den. Each cat, after being examined by the head medicine cat (who must also pick a deputy of sorts, but is only given a week), is assigned a job. There are 5 jobs you can have- The head medicine cat, the healer, the herb-sorter, the cook and the gatherer. When first becoming a medicine cat you will be observed for about a week to a month, and then your head medicine cat will pick your job. Each and every cat has a knowledge and understanding of herbs and their uses, though they each have a specific job that they will do unless the Clan needs them elsewhere in the moment. The head medicine cat does all jobs, depending on what is needed to be done at the time. Also, head medicine cats, unlike leaders do NOT receive 9 lives, or any additional lives for that matter. The healer is always the senior medicine cat, or, the cat who has been there longest (not including the head medicine cat). The healer is sort of like the doctor/surgeon of the cat world. The herb-sorter takes all the herbs that the gatherer brings in and sorts them. The cook is the cat who will go to a hot spring in the middle of the 3 Clans, WillowClan, FallenClan and HillClan- We'll talk about Clans later, though- to warm the food, like a boiling pot of water on a stove. They will also take some spices such as sage or wild garlic and 'sauces' such as honey or juniper berry jelly from the herb store if a cat requests to have it on their prey. A cat must come to the cook in order to receive prey. Finally, the gatherer goes out of the camp to search for herbs to help their Clanmates. Currently, Echokit's Clan (WillowClan) has 4 medicine cats, FallenClan has 3, and HillClan has 5.
~The warrior system! The warrior system here is similar to Warriors, but a bit different. Overall, the ceremony is the same. The words go like this:
Leader says, "_______paw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and stay loyal to your Clan, no matter what?"
_______paw says, "Yes, I do."
Leader says, "Then from here on out, you will be known as ______________ for your _________ and _________. You will be in the position of a _guard/hunter/fighter_."
Clan cheers, "__________, _________!"
But what is a guard, hunter or fighter? Well, based on what your best qualities you will be selected into one of these 3 groups. Guards guard the camp and never leave to fight. During fights they stay to make sure no one can get into the camp, or at least not getting into the camp without a bit of trouble. The second job of a guard is to guard the hunters, who though know how to fight are accustomed to hunting and are typically much better hunters than fighters. Two guards are always sent with a hunting patrol to guard them in case another animal like a badger, dog, or fox comes along, or even other cats. The hunters bring back prey from the forest to feed the Clan. It is bad to have less than 15 hunters, because your average Clan holds about 35-50 cats and you need to be able to feed all of them. Fighters are your cats who will be fighting in large fights outside AND inside the camp. Guards stay in the camp to guard the camp, but fighters go where the fight is to defend the Clan instead of staying within the camp walls to defend it. They also will go on border patrols to mark the borders and make sure there are no trespassers.
~The apprentice and mentor system is similar. An average of 6 moons time in the apprentices den, should leave the den at the age of about 12 moons or so. However you get 3 mentors, a guard, a hunter, and a fighter.
~Kits stay in the nursery for 6 moons. Queens must always have someone to keep an eye on their kits, whether it's an elder, the kits father or a fellow queen. A queen may only leave the den to return to her duties after her kits are old enough to eat regular food, and still, must have someone to watch their kits. However, elders are there for just this purpose. They are babysitters now, since they cannot help the Clan like Warriors can.
