Laughter filled the room as Courfeyrac let out another one of his stupid references to some ridiculous moment which may or may not have actually happened.
“And that’s when I said: ‘What you doing in an airplane you crazy bastard?!’” The laughter took a while to ripple out, before Courfeyrac raised his glass and shouted “Here’s to the happy couple!” To which many echoed back the same.
He stepped back as Jehan made his way up in front of the crowd:
“[In the breath of summer,
Through the sting of winter,
From sweet and gentle
To harsh and bitter.
Through pain and through suffering,
You know you mean a lot to me.
More than flower, more than rose,
More than all the future toasts.
More than wine, more than beer,
More than family and good cheer.
I am here, as you come nearer,
Due to R’s proposal beside the theatre.]”
A round of applause sounded, before it was Ariel’s turn to stand in front of them all. She chuckled lightly.
“How to follow!
When Enjolras told me that he wanted me to talk to you today, I just knew that what he’d want would be a cliché yet totally unique speech. But the first thing I thought was that I had to get some of my usual teasing in there, but, of course, I couldn’t think of anything! You have to be so bloody mature, don't you, Enj?” Enjolras smirked happily. “Well, I, of course, have to move on to his partner, my “grand frère”. The one who did too many embarrassing things whilst drunk, like jumping into the middle of the road with a rainbow flag until somebody called the police, or marrying one of my best friends.” Combeferre let out a loud laugh here, before covering his mouth. “In fact, there is only one thing I can think of which which he did whilst sober, and that was the proposal itself. I just know that he would do everything for Enjolras, his love is never just the wine talking. But as I say, pretty much everything else is. I find it remarkable that a few years ago, I was silently begging for Grantaire to admit his feelings to now, marrying the love of his life. I am immensely proud of the both of you. How far you’ve come! But Grantaire, how is it you have the courage to marry Enjolras but not drink water?”
Grantaire thought for a moment, searching his mind for a witty comeback. He held his wine bottle in the air as he announced it.
“I’m allergic!” With that, he took a huge swig of his drink.
Ariel nodded with sarcastic understanding, before stepping back into the crowd.
Violet somehow ended up being verbally pushed in front of them all, as the friends eagerly awaited the last speech. They even applauded her.
She just took it and stood there rather awkwardly before clearing her throat.
“Well, congratulations you two. But- I need to go now so erm...”
She procceeded to stand, glued to the spot for a few seconds, enduring a few awkward coughs from the crowd, before walking off. It was silent for a while after that, before Courfeyrac spoke up.
“Well then....” he began. “Let’s party!”
Most people stood up to dance with each other, whilst Ariel made a quick escape, making sure that nobody could see her. She silently followed her friend out of the apartment.
It suddenly came to her that they were outside Violet’s house. Violet quickly let herself in, not closing the door behind her. It appeared that throughout the whole journey, she hadn’t for a second noticed her there. She had to announce herself somehow. She cleared her throat.
“Hey, er... Vi?”
Violet continued to walk inside, clearly not hearing. At this point, Ariel was at a loss of what to do.
It was then that she felt a hand run across her arm. Ariel stopped.
“Damn, Ginger, it’s you! You scared me half to death!”
Ginger merely shrugged and said, “You didn’t die, so how did I scare you half to death?”
“Enough of the cheek, Ginger. It’s a figure of speech!”
“Why did you follow us here?” Ginger asked patiently.
“Because,” Ariel began, stroking her neck awkwardly. Well, she might as well say it. “Curiousity. I haven’t seen you two in so long!”
“Oh... um... we were doing... stuff.”
Ariel raised her eyebrows.
Violet emerged from her home, spotting Ariel.
“Ariel, why...?” She stopped to call Ginger towards her. “Roux, did something happen?”
Ariel lingered for a few seconds. “Um... N-no.... I’ll-I’ll go.” She turned away.
