So, I decided to make this bc so many people don't know what Les Mis is and I wanted to tell them what it's about in this studio. So if youre a random human who asked what Les Mis was and I sent you this link, welcome!
Jean Valjean, the main character, stole a loaf of bread because his family: His sister and her 7 kids, were starving. He was arrested, and sentenced into the Chain Gang for 20 years.
The main guard in the chain gang is a man named Javert (Chev-air). He is a 'square' man (-Victor Hugo) and has no feelings for anything or anyone. He hates Valjean, and same with Valjean. 19 years later, Valjean is released with Yellow Papers, indicating he is a dangerous man, and has been in prison. As a result, no one wants to hire him to work, even though now he is homeless and poor. He finally takes shelter outside a kind Bishop's house- Bishop Myriel or the Bishop of Dinge. The bishop goes outside and finds Valjean, but then welcomes him inside for dinner and a warm place to sleep for the night. Valjean gladly accepts. As they sit down for dinner he notices the Bishop's sliver laid out on the table. The bishop's maid puts it away every night. As night approaches, Valjean breaks into the bishop's room and steals the silver. In the morning, 2 constables (not Javert) come by with Valjean, telling the bishop that Valjean stole his silver and said that he said he gave it to him. The bishop says Valjean is not lying, even though the bishop is. Valjean leaves with the silver, touched by the bishop's generousness. He later destroys his Yellow Papers and starts another life, selling the silver becoming rich, and becoming the mayor and a factory owner. He changed his name to Madeleine.
A woman named Fantine, one of the many employees at the factory Valjean owns, is fired. In France at the time, it was illegal to have a child but no husband. Her child was named Cosette, and lived with an innkeeper and his wife, Thenardier and Mme. Thenardier, along with their children, Eponine and Azelma. They treated her terribly. Fantine's husband, Felix Tholomyes (they don't say his name in the movie or musical, in the book, however...), abandoned her and Cosette. (also, Javert's still alive and hunting down 24601, Valjean's prison name.) Fantine had to give Cosette to the Thenardiers so she could get a job; none would accept her because she had a child. He was fired because her foreman and fellow factory workers found out about Cosette. She was homeless, and got sick, after attacking a man who was insulting her. Javert came by and wanted her arrested. Valjean, however, said she needed to be taken to a hospital (Javert doesn't know about Valjean being Valjean yet), and he does so. There at the hospital, Valjean promises the dying Fantine that he will take care of her child, and Fantine agrees before peacefully dying. Javert finally realizes that the mayor, M. Madeleine, is Valjean, and he tries to kill him, having a sword fight with him. Valjean narrowly escapes, and flees to get Cosette. He arrives at the Thenardiers inn, and gladly gets Cosette (7), much to the anger of M. and Mme. Thenardier, who want to keep her there was a slave. They then leave to Paris, and after some trouble with Javert at the North Gate, are safe (for now...).
A group of men called The Friends of the ABC (Les Amis d'l ABC) plans to start a Revolution, following the death of General Lamarque (Did I spell that right?). Among the group is the leader, Enjolras, and a young man named Marius. As Marius is leaving his house, followed by Eponine (Remember her?) who likes Marius but Marius doesn't like her (They are good friends though), he catches site of Cosette (17 now) with Valjean, and falls in love with her, but quickly departs from her. Marius asks Eponine to find her address, and Eponine does so. Marius finds where Cosette lives. But, they are soon departed again by Patron Minette, a dangerous band of criminals led my Thenardier, who is now poor and out of his job. He tries to rob Valjean and Cosette's house, but Eponine is with him, and screams as to warn Marius, Cosette, and Valjean. Valjean thinks Javert has finally found him (Javert's still alive, but he's 52)so he plans to go to London with Cosette to escape Javert once and for all. Cosette doesn't ant to, if it means leaving Marius. Later, General Lamarque's funeral comes rolling in. Everyone in Paris is told to stand and honor him as his coffin roles by, on the street. Enjolras and the Friends of the ABC strike up revolution, and climb on top of his coffin, along with Marius, and start war. They now start to build the barricades. Valjean and Cosette have meanwhile gone to their apartment somewhere else in France. Eponine, in honor of Marius, dresses up like a boy and fights along with The Friends of the ABC. Javert disguises himself in order to spy on them, being on the other side of them, the government. https://scratch.mit.edu/studios/5507426/
