Chapter 3
I stared at her.
“No really; I want a name, not a stupid kids fairy tale!” I demanded.
Her look told me that she was dead serious.
“Crud.”
I fingered my bracelet.
“Where is my family?” I asked after a long moment.
“Your younger sister was the only survivor besides you,” she informed. “The rest…”
“Dead.” It wasn’t a question. “Of course they are! Right when I think my life can’t get any worse!”
“It’s okay-”
“No! It’s not freaking okay! You don’t know half of the crap I’ve been through!” I fumed.
I stood up abruptly and stormed off to the nearby lake to mourn.
“Give him time to cool off,” I overheard Susan say as she came out the (cabin?) door.
Why me? Why does all this crud always happen to me?

As the sun slowly set behind the horizon, and the stars started to peek out, I took out a tiny book from inside my pocket. I flipped to page 13-14:
The sapphire is usually worn by a male. It is in the form of a bracelet. In water, it might glow.
Weapon: Spear
Animal: Wolf
Power: Water
Secondary Power: Sadness
I turned the page.
To summon weapon, speak ‘Rouge’ in a forceful tone.
To summon animal, speak ‘Lupa’ in a gentle tone.
To summon power, think ‘water.’ For a learner, make sure you are near water.
To summon secondary power, think of sad things.
As you become a master, you will be able to summon these without thinking/speaking the words. You will only need to concentrate.
I closed the book and shoved it back in my pocket.
What good does that do me now? I thought. You know what, "Lupa", if you really are real, why don’t you come and show me!
I focused and yelled.
“Lupa!”
It echoed of the water in the lake, now reflecting the starry night sky. Nothing happened.
“This piece of crud!” I yelled. I threw the book as far as I could and it hit the lake with a giant splash. “You freaking book. God help me!”
I started crying. Big hot tears that slipped down my checks and into the lake.
Then there was a sudden wrench in my gut. The edge of the lake started boiling, and a wolf emerged, its deep blue eyes staring right at me. It had the book, the one I just threw into the lake, in its mouth. Then it spoke.
“I believe this is your’s.”
