“Cloudy!” Cloudy flattened his ears at the sound of his brother, Foggy, yowling his name from the rafters above. “Look up here! I found a few birds that are nesting here. We could bring them back to Penny and Kiki.”
He rolled his inky black eyes in annoyance. “Penny has enough food being brought to her. Anyways, it's not like we are kits anymore. We are older now yet we are still bringing food home,” Cloudy argued back to his huge dark gray brother who was already stepping down from the barn boards.
“I know but...Kiki is getting a little...old. If she was in a clan then she would be an elder already.”
“Yeah. I'm sure Foggy is an expert with clan stuff since he actually lived in a stinky old clan before.”
He pricked his ears towards the door as their other brother came trotting into the barn with a pheasant hanging from his small black jaws.
“Smoky! How about we eat that?” Foggy suggested, creeping across the crunchy hay littered floor. His huge paws quickly swiped the bird out of Smoky’s jaws before he could answer and Cloudy darted to the floor where the bird had fallen. Before he could think, he began to take huge bites from the flesh. He hadn't eaten a descent meal in days since the upwalker had set out mouse killers in the barn.
“Hey! That's for Penny!” Smoky rammed himself into Cloudy, knocking the patchy colored tom over into the wall. Cloudy’s ears flattened and his paws flailed as he jumped back to all fours. Smoky already had the half eaten bird in his mouth again and Foggy was trying to get it back.
“Look, we are all hungry!” Smoky hissed through gritted teeth. “But we gotta work together! Remember, Penny kills off all the alders around the fence. Without her alive and well we would all be killed by now!” He reasoned.
Foggy stepped back with a roll of his deep blue eyes. “Whatever. I still think we should live like the clan cats live. Feed the strongest and the weakest gets the last pick of the pile.”
Cloudy glanced at his brother briefly in disbelief. The forest cats had always shared their food equally according to Kiki’s stories, but then again, Foggy had actually lived with them.
“What clan did you live in?” Cloudy asked in confusion. The gray tabby tom shrugged with a lick of his paw. “Doesn't really matter but if you must know, it was ShadowClan.”
Cloudy and Smoky just rolled their eyes. “Clan cats.”
Scarletpaw sat in the small medicine cat cave of ShadowClan with her bright russet pelt brushing the sides of the muddy walls.
“Silentmouth,” She called over her shoulder.
Her mother had just finished stuffing a bundle of watermint into a hole in the mud.
“Have you seen Indigopaw?”
He had disappeared during the night, leaving only a messy nest behind.
He often liked sneaking out of camp and exploring the territory. Even though most cats like their leader, Nostar, just suspected that he was only walking around the forest Scarletpaw knew where he was going.
She had seen him sneak out to the rogue camp where Deadbone and Lostpath trained young warrior like a dark forest cat would.
Indigopaw had attended several of these training sessions.
“No, why are you asking?” Silentmouth asked in confusion. “Usually you too don't get along well.”
Scarletpaw shrugged. “Just would like to know, that's all.”
Her heart raced nervosuly and her eyes widened. She was very worried about her brother.
Deadbone was the daughter of the DarkDrops, the most famous rogue in the whole forest.
“Well, stop honking about your brother and help me gather some more herbs.”
Silentmouth ruffled her dark gray pelt with a sigh. “Leaf-bare is coming and soon there won't be any more.”
The apprentice’s heart filled with joy. She loved going herb hunting and the best part was that he only herbs that were still alive grew by WindClan.
WindClan is near the two-leg barn where the rogues set up camp.
She had heard of kitty-pets living with the rogues in the barns too. “C’mon, Scarletpaw.” Silentmouth begun to walk out the door as she picked up the leaf bundle in her mouth. “Daylight is running out.” Scarletpaw nodded quickly as she walked behind her mentor and down the steep muddy hill that led towards the ShadowClan camp entrance.
The wind brushed leaves like soft feathers out of the dying trees that scattered WindClan borders. Heather stretched out across the plains and poured out near the cliffs. Silentmouth and Scarletpaw walked carefully along the stone covered path towards the grove of trees where most herbs grew.
“Right over there is where the herbs should be.”
Silent mouth pointed with her tail towardis a small medow where a stream trickled down the side.
Scarletpaw pricked her ears with a nod as she glanced over at the meadow.
Just as she was walking over with her eyes glued on the gorgeous stream she saw something fly into the water.
She tilted her head in confusion as she watched a bundle of fur being tossed down the stoney stream. She then realized it was IndigoPaw..
