Silent Stars – Twitch’s Story
In the early hours of dawn, shrouded in mist, two kittens lay. Their parent’s blood stained the ground around them as they shivered in the cold, their pelts damp with dew. That same morning, a large, black she-wolf happened across these kittens. She bent down and sniffed them, he eyes darting around, this mist scared her, anything could hide in this thick cloak. The wolf sniffed the air, she could smell water, damp soil, and something else. Out of the mist came a cat. She was blazing ginger, she smelled of ash and damp charcoal, A Planette! Thought Whisper the black wolf, Leader of the Starrys. The cat paused, sniffing the air, “Take these kittens, the prophecy has told you” The mysterious cat dipped her head and stalked back into the mist, that was a surprisingly docile Planette, Thought Whisper, scooping up the kittens in case there were more, not-so-nice Planettes about. Whisper flew up into the cold air, shaking her damp wings. She flew about, looking for a gap in the mist, even just a small one, so they could escape earth. Whisper stopped abruptly, flying swiftly upwards. Seconds later she and the kittens were surrounded by stars. Whisper sighed, looking down on the misty globe they had just departed, and flew onwards towards a dark planet. When Whisper reached the dark planet where the Starrys had made their camp, she laid the kittens down on the purplish-black soil and performed a naming ceremony. “Flicker” Whisper began, “You shall heal, but never forget how to fight for your friends” Whisper nosed the black kitten and his eyes opened, “Flicker!” He squeaked excitedly, “Shhh” Whisper growled softly, and continued with the ceremony. “Twitch” Whisper said, her gaze shifted towards the small bluey-grey she-cat. “You will be a strong warrior, but remember, fight fairly” Whisper bent over the small kitten “Twitch!” Flicker mewed, “Twitch and Flicker!”.
Whisper sighed and picked up Twitch, her face twisted with worry. She padded back to the Starry’s camp, closely followed by Flicker, bounding along happily. As Whisper entered the camp, heads turned. Whisper laid Twitch in the center of the clearing, “Vengance!” Whisper howled. A small cat shot out from a dark bush and skidded to a halt in front of Whisper, “These kittens, I want you to look after them” Whisper said, then, lowered her voice, “Especially Twitch”. Vengance nodded and picked up Twitch, who wrapped her wings tightly around her chest. Whisper cocked her head, “Vengance?” Whisper said hesitantly, “Could you take Twitch to Orbit and Scruff?” She asked, “I think Twitch was injured when some cats killed her parents”. Vengance padded towards the obsidian cave where Orbit and Scruff kept their remedies. “This is Twitch” Vengance began, “Whisper found her and her brother in the Mist, we think the cats who killed her parents injured her, The Anti-Prophets still live” Orbit nodded solemnly, and sent Scruff to get some black leaves from the back of the cave. “I see Scruff is going well with her training, she will soon be able to choose her healer name” Vengance observed. Orbit nodded, Pulling the hood of his purple cape off his head and examining Twitch. “Well, she seems fine” He said gruffly, “But her wings, they are blood-stained” He said, lifting Twitch’s wings to reveal a deep gash in the kitten’s chest. Vengance gasped, and Orbit nodded gravely. “What profession is she following, did Whisper say what she would become if she kept her name?” Scruff asked, “No” Replied Vengance, “But, her name has the ring of a masked Assassin” Vengance continued. Orbit padded shrivelled black leaves on Twitch’s wound and the skin healed, forming a scar. “That will tear easily in battle, but it will heal quickly afterwards so the blood she loses when in tears will not kill her” Orbit explained. Twitch opened her eyes, they were icy blue, unlike her brother’s black eyes. “So I will fight?” Twitch asked, flapping her wings and yawning. “Yes, if you keep your name” Said Vengance, “If you change your name, you will become a Hunter, and capture Planettes on our territory” Explained Vengance. “Where is my mother?” Twitch asked, her eyes looking around the room for her parents. “There was a battle” Explained Vengance, “They protected you, but I will be your mother now” Said Vengance sadly, “Oh.” Said Twitch simply. Days past until Twitch was bored of the obsidian cave, nothing had happened, Twitch was just drifting off to a bored, dreamless sleep, when, outside, excited yips came from a small black wolf pup. “Starrys, To me!” Whisper howled an ancient command from battles and ceremonies past. Twitch rose, she recognised that command, somewhere in her past, in her blood, she remembered...
