Maybe, instead if something magical happening maybe magic is part if the world building. Like. Everyone is aware it exists but most people are sitting ducks to the point it's normalized to not have it despite mist people having the ability?

Some plot stuff: magic took a unique form to different people. Like, some could shapeshift, defy gravity, illusions etc...
certain people were born with different powers! And (I don't know) different powers are at war or something!
civil war between two types of magic except they have to hide it within the everyday life
-Everyone has magic but like only a few are aware of it or even have it strong enough to affect your everyday life -If you die there's a chance of becoming a ghost, your powers will strengthen or weaken depending on what and why. - All magic has a entrance/exit point. This may be another reason people are unaware of magic.
