The issue [POSSIBLE TRIGGER WARNING]:
OK, so it’s kind of sad that this needs clarifying, but apparently it does. Racism is treating someone differently simply because of the color of their skin/their race. Racism isn’t just “Oh, I’m gonna go out and harass people I don’t like because they don’t look like me”. There’s a whole spectrum to it. Sometimes, people are racist without even realizing it. If there’s an action you take, ask yourself “Would I be doing this if the person was [insert race]?” If the answer is no, it’s likely that you might have been a bit racist. That doesn’t make YOU racist, but that particular action might have been. And that doesn’t make you a horrible person. It makes you human. You can learn and build off of these experiences. But the problem is when people don’t. The problem is when they hurt, harass, oppress, and generally just make life harder for people of different races.
It’s likely you’ve heard of a few of these.
First of all, there’s the George Floyd incident. Here’s what happened. He walked into a store, and tried to pay with a fake twenty dollar bill. (Contrary to what you may have heard, no, he did not have COVID-19 and no, he was not on drugs) We don’t know if he was even aware that the bill was fake. Why not? Because he’s dead. Somebody in the store called the police. This in itself is not a problem. They saw he was paying with a fake bill, and then called the authorities. That’s fine, although some might find it excessive. But the real problem is what happened when the police arrived. One of the officers pinned him to the ground, and put his knee to his (George Floyd’s) neck, consequentially choking him while the others did nothing to stop him. George Floyd literally said “I can’t breathe, officer,” while the man choked him for 8:46. He ended up dying. Now, would the same thing have happened if George Floyd had been a white man? We’ll never know, but it’s quite probable that he would have been treated more reasonably in that situation. We don’t know for sure if he was killed out of racism, but it is INCREDIBLY LIKELY that he was. Why? Well, yes, paying with a fake bill is wrong and illegal. But we don’t even know if he was aware it wasn’t legitimate. Using fake money is a crime, but certainly not serious enough to result in death as a punishment. George Floyd literally said “I can’t breathe”, so the officer DEFINITELY knew that he was harming him, yet still continued. So why did it happen? Probably because he was a black man, and was treated unfairly due to that.
There’s also Breonna Taylor. She was a medical technician. One night, three police officers literally went into her house without notifying her at all. Breonna Taylor was shot eight times and died. And it turns out that they had the wrong house and the wrong person. I think- I hope, we can all agree that was completely uncalled for and unreasonable. Now, once again, we can’t confirm that she was treated that way because she was black. But once again, it is likely that if she (and her boyfriend, who was also there) had been white, maybe she would still be alive.
Jeremy Mardis was a six year old child, who was killed by a police officer for “self defense reasons” He was SIX.
Elijah McClain was literally just walking home. He was confronted by the police because he was “suspicious-looking”. He was wearing a ski mask. I mean yeah, it’s a bit unusual. But he was CHOKED, and then DIED.
Why you shouldn’t say All Lives Matter:
The whole point of Black Lives Matter is to provide support for those who are oppressed. People aren’t trying to say “Black lives matter more than other lives”, they’re trying to remind people that black lives are just as important as any other. Why? Because they’re treated like they aren’t. Yes, of course every life matters. And last time I checked, that included black lives, right? So, if someone is being harassed, injured, oppressed, or put last because of their race, then they are being treated like they matter less. And, if this happens, we should do something to speak up and help.
If you say “All Lives Matter” as an argument against BLM, you prove no point at all. BLM isn’t saying that only black lives matter. BLM isn’t trying to make any race more important than others. The whole point of black lives matter is to ensure that nobody is treated differently because of their race.
