Please read this if you have time. If not, just know it takes place in the woods in/near a haunted house in Albania.
He was born in 1989. His parents got in a huge fight and divorced. The judge made him live with his abusive father. His dad had an addiction to alcohol and smoking and was always caught either with a cigarette or a bottle of beer. His mom was nice and like basically every other mom; she loved flowers, she exaggerated minor accomplishments and was always nice. One day, she got in a car crash. It broke her neck, but she survived. Then, the doctors had to do surgery on her, but it went wrong, and she died from a blood clot. Gery's dad was the only family he had left. Or so he thought. When Gery was 10, three years after his mom passed away, his father got arrested for child abuse and illegal driving while being drunk. It was 1999. Gery was sent to his uncle's place in Greece. All the way across the ocean! So Gery packed his things in less than a week and took the flight from Uppingtown to nearby Athens, where his Uncle Castor owned a villa. Gery HATED his uncle. He thought his dad was abusive, but his uncle flat-out used him as a slave! He did all the laundry, all the yard work, all the dishes, all the cleaning, and was always rewarded with the leftovers and a beating. Sometimes, Gery would steal his uncle's clothes so he wouldn't go naked. He would roll them in the mud so Castor wouldn't notice, and then left them out to dry. Once, Gery's uncle recognized his shirt and made Gery starve for the rest of the week. Luckily it was Friday. But, unlike Gery's dad, Castor made Gery keep the abusive behavior a secret. He let Gery wear some of his clothes when they went out and smacked Gery's cheeks to redden them. If Gery gave away the secret, Castor vowed to take away all his meals and make him work even harder. As if that was possible! So, whenever Gery went to the store to get some eggs or cleaning materials, he did his best to smile and act normal. Then, before his 11th birthday, Gery decided he had had enough. He ran away, with only an apple, and rode the train all the way to Albania. While he was there, he found some Euros on the ground and bought a sandwich. He saved the apple for later but quickly gobbled up the sandwich as if it was the last meal he would ever have. After he was done in Albania, he got on a train to Italy. But before the train left, the workers found out that Gery didn't have a ticket and threw him out. So he was stuck in Albania. He stayed on the streets for a couple of days, but it was getting close to winter and he was freezing, even in the middle of the day. Gery wandered away from the city and eventually reached the woods when it was late at night. He saw a flickering light and ran to it. When he arrived, he knocked three times on the wooden door. Both for luck, and to see if anyone was there. No one answered. While he waited for a response, he ate his apple. After a few minutes of dreadful silence, a wolf howled. That did it. If anyone was living in there, they would have to accept him, because he refused to be eaten by a wolf. When he opened the door, he stood face-to-face with a tall, old man. He glared down at Gery and held his collar. Gery screamed and kicked at him, but it made no difference. Gery was too weak to even trip the old man. Gery was taken down the creaky stairs and into the basement, where he passed mice and rats and spiders and bones. The old man opened the door to a tiny closet and threw Gery in. He got claustrophobic. Gery tried to open the doors, but they were bolted shut. Gery crumbled to ground and sobbed. Life just got worse and worse for him. After less than a week, he died from lack of oxygen and starvation. The night he died, a terrible storm raged. He could feel consciousness slipping from him and didn't try to stop it. He didn't want to live this life. He fell to the ground and waited for the quiet sounds to go silent, for the dark room to be darker... And he died. And then he was undead. A large bolt of lightning struck the mansion and the man dead. It also awakened Gery's spirit. He felt himself floating and looked down to find his body. It was lifeless. The color was drained out and his eyes were blank. Gery then knew he was a ghost. He didn't know how, and he didn't believe in them before that. He just knew. He tried floating through the doors, but it was no use. He was still stuck. He waited there, bored out of his mind, his hunger growing more and more each day. But there was nothing that could be done.
