why am i applying .. ?
firstly, i love the hellebore family! i've already had a character within it once and it was a great experience to roleplay, so i'm excited to try out again. i heard of the litter when it was orginally being teased, and i was really excited about the concept and themes of the litter. additionally, mulberry has an adorable design (thank you jun smiles). i have a lot of character concepts that i think would mesh well with the family and i would have a lot of fun roleplaying.

i've been roleplaying for four years and three months in total ! thats around when i made my first scratch account, and i'm afraid i was not a very talented roleplayer at the beginning, but i do think i've improved! i started out with a few smaller roleplays before moving on into generations. my first generations character was named fireflyflare, and she was a hotheaded jerk who eventually got exiled from her clan at the age of 40 moons ! she died a while after unfortunately because i wanted a fresh start , and my second character was serpentshade ! she was killed off due to a lack of interest, since i had just joined tfcrp.

quick disclaimer, mulberry does not have DID. the DSM-5-TR's criteria for a diagnosis of dissociative identity disorder will be shown below for a method of explaining this clearly.

while mulberry does have different mannerisms, ways of speaking, and behavior throughout her masks, her inner thoughts and behavior do not change at all. (fun little infodump that ill move later her thoughts start off towards the beginning of her first character arc are more violently energetic, as if she was still the younger verison of herself, and they sometimes slip out in her behavior. to make up for this, she often pauses a few seconds before speaking, sorting out the thoughts that belong to herself and thinking what this new persona would say or do, or what would want to be heard.)
she keeps all her memories from her past experiences after, and does not experience any gaps between states that are abnormal. to the best of my knowledge and research, this is not DID. if you have any questions or any of my research is incorrect, please tell me as soon as possible. thank you.



CORE FEAR :

to be “bad” is to be unworthy of love. to be “herself” is dangerous.

for the first 6 or so moons of her life, mulberry is incredibly needy, loud, and annoying. she scratches her siblings, kicks and screams when she does not get her way, and will say anything to anyone if it gets her what she wants. she takes food from her siblings even if they are hungrier than she is, if they cry she cries louder, if someone else gets attention, she interrupts, pushes, or forces the spotlight back to her whether that be by faking an injury or making up imaginary threats. she lashes out physically without much thought. she lies to get what she wants, she tattles strategically, blaming others so she avoids punishment. she ruins play by demanding to be the center of the game. she laughs when another kit falls or gets scolded. if someone around her is getting teased or bullied, at best she watches without interacting, and at worse she joins in and pokes more fun at them. she stays up as late as possible and keeps her siblings awake, poking and prodding them to avoid letting them sleep.


this is what mulberry views as herself. selfishness, greed, aggression, manipulation, envy, cruelty – these are all the pieces that make her who she is. one morning she wakes up and she looks at the day before it and all the days before that and she thinks to herself that something has gone wrong, she was not born to be like this, she was meant to be something greater. so she becomes something greater. she is a good scientist, after all, and the behavior of people around her is her data set, her quest to engineer the perfect person … aka her. she keeps logs of her process, of the methods she invents and discards. she figures out fairly fast that each person has different “ideals” to live up to, so there isn't some figure that she must be, she must learn to be everyone and everything. duality is the key element, no one person can be enough.

CORE DESIRE :

she dreams of being irreplacable, indispensable, always needed. to her, love feels conditional, fragile, and fleeting — but need? need is solid, undeniable. if she is needed, she cannot be abandoned. she dreams of being the person who has answers no one else can give, the one who holds the people together when others falter. if she weren’t there, everything would fall apart. if she wasn't there, there would be nothing else. she doesn’t actually want to be loved unconditionally because she doesn’t think it exists. what she settles for is being needed conditionally, because need feels safer than love. and isn't it? the issue with her grand design is that she cannot think of a reason she would be needed as herself. she is strong, but there are stronger that do not come with her burdens. she is smart, but there are smarter that do not come with her burdens, and so on. the only thing she can think of is that she must be everything all at once. she knows that for one person with one set of dreams and thought patterns cannot do this, so she must adopt different avatars to hold her.

MASKS :

a mask for mulberry is not a literal mask, it’s how she changes herself to fit what someone else needs, it’s the way she talks, moves, even thinks around them so they feel comfortable, admired, or needed. she mirrors their habits and moods, softens or sharpens her voice, tilts her body, shows exactly the right amount of excitement, fear, or curiosity, she pays attention to tiny things like the flick of a tail or the pause before a word, and she uses all of that to become indispensable to them, it’s not pretending to be someone else entirely, it’s bending herself without breaking herself too much so that others see exactly what they want, and the real mulberry is always watching from behind the performance, careful to hide the cracks in her own soul while keeping everyone else close. she figures out what is wanted, and then she eases into the role, and hopes that in time, her absence will hurt them — that she will become needed.

of course, this does not come naturally, she does not wake up one morning with a mastery of feline behavior, it is something she has to build painstakingly, layer by layer, like stacking fragile glass blocks, her first attempts clumsy and uncertain, almost toddler like, the pauses before she speaks long and jagged, the words coming out uneven or too loud, sometimes saying things the wrong way entirely and realizing it too late, her face betraying her for a few seconds. a twitch of annoyance, a flare of frustration, a blink too slow or a smile too quick before she can force it down, she notices how small motions can give her away and obsesses over them for days, practicing in private, imitating, copying, discarding, trying again and again, every interaction a test and every failure a lesson, she measures the effect on others with hawk eyes, wondering what slipped, what they saw, what they might think, and slowly, painstakingly, she begins to smooth the edges. she learns which flicks of an ear or tilt of a head suggest trust, which words calm or excite, which silences make someone lean in and which push them away, but even as she gains skill, it is exhausting, and she has to constantly remind herself to breathe, to control the beast (her inner emotions) inside, to keep the flickers from betraying her, because the first attempts showed her that even the smallest slip can undo everything.

please note that these traits do not guarantee her behavior. they can sprout differently depending on context. in rp she may lean into or reject them, sometimes embodying the exact opposite of what a trait suggests. a “loyal” mulberry might betray someone she does not care about if it secures her connection to someone she cares about more, a “cold” mulberry might comfort another cat when it serves her need to be indispensable. she displays traits that are not on the list, she can be oblivious or laid back if it suits her mask. the masks take over her “personality” but these traits tend to lurk below the surface and show themselves in flashes.

dynamic with helleborestar!!
mulberry might force himself to speak with big gestures, dramatic tones, or overly bright expressions, because he notices how her energy fills a room and demands attention. the problem is, when he tries this, it feels unnatural and hollow, almost like a parody of her liveliness, and it risks coming across uncanny to anyone who knows him well. she can hear it in her own voice, and she gradually calms down. it feels like wearing a costume, but when he tries it, they worries that helleborestar sees him as “less than” because he’s not as dazzling. she’s a natural actor most of the time, but the moment she slips it feels as though its all over. she’s always the fool in their game. she rapidly fluctuates between masks and faces, can’t she make something beautiful too?

what kind of daughter would helleborestar want, and what kind of daughter does she provide? they are not one and the same, she knows this. she wishes for an answer that she cannot ask for, because then it would be revealed that she is a pretender. she knows helleborestar knows, she just doesn’t know what to do after that. she has nothing else she can be, so she tries on different figures and shapes, hoping something will stay and scream in her ears, “YES, THIS IS WHAT YOU WERE MEANT TO BE, THIS IS WHAT YOU ARE WANTED FOR.” because his mother doesn’t approve, mulberry internalizes the rejection as personal failure. he begins to obsess over his every action, trying to dissect what went wrong and how to adjust, yet each attempt only confirms that his mimicry cannot achieve the standards set out for him. he is constantly performing, but with the added weight of knowing it is ineffective. the mask he wears becomes heavy, draining, almost physically painful; it separates him further from his own desires and true self (was there ever a true self, and should it be brought back? can it be brought back? he doesn’t know, she will never know). the strain intensifies, will her back break before her heart strengthens? because her disapproval is faint/inconsistent, mulberry obsesses over every microexpression, every hesitation, even imagined slights. he fills in the blanks with his own fears, inventing reasons why their actions might be “wrong,” and aadjusts accordingly. he convinces himself that pauses, small sighs, or neutral glances are signs of disappointment, even when she doesn’t intend them that way. this leads him to overcorrect or dive in a completely different direction, mannerisms shifting and warping. he doesn’t understand, how could he ever understand?

theres a bit more in the rambles i think but she really does love her mother, and does her best to be a good daughter. however, she tends to see the mother daughter relationship as more of a box that needs to be checked off than an actual relationship. she doesn't look to be understood, she just wants to be seen, no matter in what way.

plot ideas .. ?

uhhh i dont have a lot of plot ideas but one of them is that at some point mulberry will adopt a sort of vigilante persona. however, she can't exactly show her face while pursuing justice, so she puts on a metal suit.

it would be a suit themed on medival armor with things added and subtracted to make it friendly for like a cat to wear. ive had this idea for a while but i never got around to asking about it. basically, it would cover their chest, shoulders, spine, back and forelimbs, with a crudely made mask that covers it. the “armor” would be twoleg made in canon (if he would need to be a kittypet or visit for this part lmk!!) anyways

the chest would be made out of hardened steel alloy and padded with leather to absorb some shock damage and prevent chaffing. it would be segmented horizontally to allow max freedom when running and jumping.

the shoulders would have angled, laayered plates that extend over the top and outer edges uhhhhhh idk theyd be flared to deflect impact away from joints as much as possible. and theyd lock in w the chest using magnets. the forelimbs guards would be steel and as flexible as possible for the back areas and such anwyays im not going to go into every single thing (i havent figured out the rest im working on it i swear )

anways if the concept is okay i could try and create a model of it to show the admin team exactly how it would work if there are concerns on realism of the build, but it would possibly take me a week or two to fully make considernig im not that experienced in 3d modeling and id probably have to use a more advanced program tha ni do now but!

anwyays there would obv be flaws with it, theres still the weight issue since that will. cause problems no matter how you spin it or what metals you use (or maybe im missing something idk) but it would be fatiguing for mulberrykit over long periods of time, so theyd have to keep it on for less than an hour or so, and be extrenly drained afterward. it could slow reaction times slightly compared to an unarmored cat. ++
if its warm, mulberry inside could get overheated or uncomfortable leading to again lingering exhaustion and potenitally heatstroke, metal plates can still clang and shift which would make stealth diffcult, and they would find it very hard to sneak up on anyone or hunt in it. taking off the suit (which i will detail later) would be pretty hard and time consuming, and the character might not be able to get certain connected parts off, leading to them having to return to the twoleg, try their best to damage the pieces until they fall off, or return to camp wearing them (exposing their idenity yadadada) and when putting it on pieces might be incorrectly worn a lot of the time, leading to major issues / injuries and a steep learning curve. if it doesnt fit well it could cause long term issues and make it difccult for them to run full speed or do things quickly, and even more issues in old age. also, metal plates can dent, bend, or scratch, especially in fights or scuffles or just running around and falling down. they'd have to be replaced by the twoleg or removed frequently, leading to periods where mulberry would not have the suit at all.
anyways to wear the armor mulberry would first make sure all the buckles straps and stuff are open, and the suit would be stored in the kittypet place, in a shed or something, wear it would hang for easy wearing. mulberry would step into the vest thing first, slide its limbs into the limb guards kind of like how shirts are worn, the spine adjusts automitcally, and the rest would magentically attach. however, there would often be issues, and mulberry might get stuck like trying to put it on until the twoleg comes and helps them with it, or damage some pieces by mistake!!! anyways it would be taken off by pulling on straps near the bottom of the legs so a cat could reach or push it against something. this also has the risk of the suit coming off while mulberry is fighting something but oh well i dont have another idea

rambles .. ?
ok i lowkey have nothinig but uh! vibes duality of human nature repression and trauma isolation and alienation make him an unreliable narrator, believes himself to be intelligent and prides himself on it, its his own redeeming quality after all. he can plan and think and analyze all he wants but when he hits fight or flight he always fights, his words are sharp and cruel and his actions violent. he is triggered by irritation at injustice, incompetence, or personal failure. he is triggered by feeling trapped, endangered, or powerless. being humiliated in front of others the BEAST does not care for rules, ethics, or his own / others safety. he is manipulative & Intimidating when enraged or desperate. (in his scientist sense, he is kind and caring and others can confide in him, this part of him uses that against them) he also…feels as though he enjoys it, he feels a rush from control, aggression, or bending situations to his will in a world where nothing seems to go as planned. it feels nice to be the biggest and strongest in the room. he destroys object, things that he wears, rips them apart at his own free will. constantly thinking, overanalyzing, and controlling everything mentally. when intellect fails to control emotion, the beastly side erupts. how can you get a person to show their true self? give them a mask. he makes little masquerade masks when he’s a child, he likes to play pretend. masked viglentee type thing hes based off bruce banner jekyll and hyde and i lost the list jekyll and hyde and hulk and tripartite soul and and and and and and shadow and jungian pysch and existentialism and will to power and ! this however! i am back with more ideas because im evil and scary and yeah. okay so this is also me linking science to god, a type of religion if you will uhh freud said humanity created god as a projection of their fears and desires aka a way to give structure to the uncontrollable right for somethingkit this isnt a religion in the typical sense (it actually may be once i finish working on it sciencereligion but that would need me to like reserarch more which ill do soon!! i have a lot to reseaerch hmm) for soemthingkit, this parallels how he constructs science, masks, or rational systems to cope with his own inner chaos, thats his god…? his self-made religion is designed to give him control, and since the rest of the world does not view it the way he does and he deep down doesn't think theyre smart enough to see it (very deep down he would never admit this UHHHH OK NOW freud’s model of mind (id, ego, suepreog) mirrors the scientist vs beast thing which is what im calling it until i figure out a better name. id -> beast’s violence, pleasure in strength, instinct. raw part of humanity (this has a lot of ties to sopranos world view and character but in a different sense ill explain it in my offical application how soprano branson and osmethingkit link to each other) ego (mediator) -> the scientist, logical, trying to balance both worlds, just a girl in the world idk superego (moral law) his guilt, shame, human restraint yadada okay i dont really reemmber much about this part but I THINK freud was like repression only makes unconscious drives more powerful WHICH MEANS his refusal to acknowledge his rage makes the beast stronger, not weaker. so by ignoring the problem and drowning in guilt he makes it stronger!!! wow intellect replaces religion as the crutch, he sees through the gods of others ( faith, gut instinct, simple morality ), and trusts only his mind. but reason cannot answer his emotional/animal self, and his mind fails its only true purpose 

 
controlling him, he claims his logic keeps him safe but the repression cracks him apart further until the slightest issues snap him. he never goes out with the intent to hurt anyone, but the dominos collaspe onto him until he loses that rational ascept of his mind and since that was all that made him “human” he becomes almost beastlike in nature. wow

i wrote a paper about this once hang on mulberry is heart + death representation mulberry’s life is centered around his guilt which starts in minor things which are repressed and bottled away until they explode into major things!! they are islly



 * shes also extremly jealous of praise/attention given to others, she wants them to be praised and happy, yes, but she wonders why its special. is it that she is lesser than them? when others are praised or held above them, he is doing something wrong. he needs to become like them, and he tends to copy other people in order to achieve that. hes not outwardly seeking attention, he doesnt do crazy things, but if paid attention to, she will always be working to better herself.

but if he is the own being praised, it fills them with terror. she feels like shes clinging to a cliff and has to become stronger every second – what was good enough yesterday is not good enough today, what if people are not impressed, what if everyone else grows while he stays the same? they have to be a step ahead, always learning and always growing in fear that people will bore of him, will no longer have use or need to want her there. he could be replaced, he has to be irreplacable to everyone. he HATES a lot of the stuff she does, but she would never show it, she acts like its a blessing to be able to do eveything she does, she attempts to gaslight herself into believing she enjoys it. he has a lot of interests outside of what he does, but he never talks about them or even does them, but they constantly fill his thoughts when hes doing things that she doesnt enjoy. if he is not encourged to do rthem, if it will nto make people like her more, whats the point? he would never talk to anyone about this, “forcing” people to listen to you talk is too much effort to put them through, esp for a cat that is a liar and a cheat, a pretender wearing a mask. but without the mask, she is nothing and she knows it. without the pretend and the games, what makes her special? nothing, so how can she let it go? he doesnt desserve to induluge in his own life until hes lived everyone elses, maybe shell find joy in there, somewhere. he must just not be looking hard enough

she knows shes guilty and she always will be, the more she pretends to be something else the harder it is, her emotions are big and loud but she isnt allowed to feel them. nobody else is forcing her to do this, its not their fault, the call is coming from inside the house anyways, she makes the choices, she has to live with them ok so mulberry trains as hard as possible, but he also cares a lot about the people around them and tries to make them as happy as possible. he’s not outwardly…emotional? if that makes sense. he doesn’t cry at all as a child, and he always seems to be either mildly happy or neutral. he tries his best to take care of his siblings and mother. his personality shifts around each person he interacts with. when hellebore is shaky, afraid, or quiet, mulberry doubles down on being “neutral” he doesn’t want to upset her further, so he softens himself even more,he makes sure to moderate his emotions completely, and tries to do little things to make her feel steadier without drawing attention to himself. he speaks softer than normal, takes good care of himself (grooming, eating, and drinking on time) so she doesnt feel like she has to, and entertains his siblings, trying to take as much weight off her as possible. she interpets hellebores mood changing as stress from being leader / raising a family, and treats her like thats the case. they however truly think that he must have done someting wrong, and when hellebore reverts to “normal” he picks up the game and works harder to please her. you know stylized heart vs antomically accurate heart thats kinda her core



 * in childhood she welcomes death as the end of it all, the end of masks, the end of life. it is her duty to stay on earth until the nautral end of her life, but she doesnt fear it. when she learns of starclan and the fact that her mask will stretch to the end of time, it sends her into a panic, but what choice does she have?



 
and once the mask is adorned, he fears starclan and their all knowing eye, he knows he is a liar and a cheat and a fraud, and he will pay the eternal price. but somehow… he does not fear it. mulberry when she learns patterns exist!
