2025: A Year In Movie Reviews
Dog Man: This is a pretty good movie. If you like the original books, you'll love this movie since it's very faithful to the series and a lot of scenes, moments, and quotes are taken directly from the books. However, while it's good, it isn't one of DreamWorks' more memorable works. The pacing is very fast, and there isn't much breathing room, except in the first act, and the actual villain is introduced a bit too late. But the animation style is visually pretty good and faithfully translates the 2D drawings of the books to a 3D format, just like Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, a previous DreamWorks film based on Dav Pilkey's books. 7/10
A Minecraft Movie: This movie is so terrible that it's awesome. It was pretty clear to see that the crew didn't take themselves seriously when making this movie and they had fun with it. It's so goofy and silly, Jack Black and Jason Momoa as Steve and Garrett respectively are a hilarious and awesome duo, and if you know the memes, you'll love to finally see them on the big screen. But on a more serious level, this movie fails, and when it comes to characters, all the characters are flat except for Garrett, who's the only one who has character development. The dialogue is bad, the ending doesn't really make sense when it comes to character arcs and sort of ruins those arcs (especially for Steve), and the villain doesn't even have that interesting of a motivation. But this movie's redeeming factor is what makes it so meme-able, goofy, silly, and chaotically fun. 6/10
Mission Impossible - The Final Reckoning: A very good movie. Tom Cruise doing his stunts is just fantastic as always, and the stakes will keep you on the edge of your seat for a long while. However, the pacing was terrible and a bit rushed in the beginning of the movie, and the recap it gives of all the previous films in the Mission Impossible franchise is pretty emotional but feels out of place and unnatural. But after that, the movie quickly recovers. 8/10
Jurassic World Rebirth: An underwhelming movie. There's a lack of that signature thrill and action of the previous Jurassic World films. Actually, there's a lack of action and development overall in this movie. It focuses more on the characters, but even they don't feel like they have much depth (except for that dinosaur nerd man, I liked him, but that was just about his only trait; it did feel like the captain guy (the one with the beret-like hat) had some depth to him). But the lore given in this movie and the CGI was pretty good. There's this one scene with a Tyrannosaurus rex that makes you sit on the edge of your seat, but that's just about it. 5/10

KPop Demon Hunters: A fantastic movie! The animation is so stylish and beautiful, the plot is pretty good, the characters that are important are all fleshed out, and the songs are very good and very catchy (I can't get Soda Pop out of my head!). The choppy animation style reminds me a lot of the Spider-Verse films (which are also by the same studio as this movie, Sony Pictures Animation), and the color schemes are pretty eye-pleasing. The jokes, both goofy visual ones and in the dialogue, are pretty funny, and it makes some good references to Korean media and pop culture. There are also some pretty emotional parts, and the ending was satisfying. However, the relationship between Rumi and Jinu did feel a little forced, but it’s justified as it helps with the character arcs and development. I also felt like the dialogue delivery for Rumi and Jinu could’ve been better, but maybe that’s just me. 8.9/10

How to Train Your Dragon: A great movie! The CGI is pretty good (except for one scene where Hiccup and Astrid are flying on Toothless at night, where the greenscreen looks pretty obvious), the action is great, and the soundtrack is just as beautiful as the original. Granted, I haven't yet seen the original film (I've listened to its soundtrack, though), but I've heard that this is an almost entirely faithful remake of it (pushing the appearance of the cast aside). I'll edit this review once I've watched the original movie. The pacing and delivery of the dialogue did feel a little off to me, as well as the transitioning and cutting to between scenes, but those are relatively small issues. 7.9/10

The Wild Robot: Amazing movie, the animals still acted like animals, yet the viewers were still able to understand them. This movie also doesn't try to forcefully steer itself into a sequel to make more money with its outstanding quality for a 21st century movie.

The Plankton movie (7/10): Was enjoyable, but something just felt off to try and convince me to give it a 4/10.

The Fantastic Four - First Steps: A pretty good movie! The plot was good, even though to me it felt a little bit predictable. The film did have its emotional moments, and the jokes landed pretty well! However, the villain Galactus felt a little too… nonsensical, but then again, I don’t know the comics and their lore, so who am I to judge that? The CGI actually wasn’t that realistic; the only good CGI were the powers and the appearance of the Thing. The Silver Surfer’s design felt a little uncanny. The climactic battle scene didn’t feel tense enough. Oh, and also, Johnny’s final confrontation with the Silver Surfer: it doesn’t feel that serious because up until then, Johnny was sort of a comic relief character, the guy whose remarks made the audience laugh, but here he is now being serious and dramatic. This would have improved if Johnny had some brief moments where he is serious and solemn before this scene to establish that while he may be laidback and easy to laugh at, he can still be serious. But I really liked the soundtrack and loved the retro 60s aesthetic! Overall, though, pretty good! 7/10

The Bad Guys 2: A great movie! As a huge fan of the first film, I may be a little biased, but I absolutely loved this movie! Because I was such a huge fan of the first, this was also my most highly anticipated movie of 2025 from the moment the first trailer released last year. But if I'm gonna be non-biased here, I think it was more of the “great” tier rather than “really great” or “fantastic.” The animation was really good and they upped the expressiveness of the characters! That opening car chase was really good. I absolutely loved the fact that we got a little more focus on Chief (now Commissioner) Misty Luggins and explored her dynamic with Wolf a little more and even got her to actually like and respect him, since she was sort of a goofy character in the first film (she was also my favorite character for some reason, still is, and I still don't know why). The action sequences were really good and the animation was overall really fun to watch. The storytelling was a lot more confident this time around compared to the first. The “all is lost” scene here feels much more intense than the one in the first movie. I loved the score by Daniel Pemberton, but I really didn't like the random pop songs included (although, I really like that new Busta Rhymes song!). The designs for Kitty Kat, Pigtail, and Doom are really good. Loved Danielle Brooks' voice acting with Kitty, but I felt she's sort of an unexplored character. Maria Bakalova could've also done her voice-acting with Pigtail better. We should've gotten a little bit more of Diane Foxington, though; she was sort of unexplored in the first film and doesn't really explicitly establish anything more in the sequel, and she doesn't have that much screentime. The ending also should've been a little bit more grounded (granted, the first film had mind-controlled guinea pigs, but it was overall sorta realistic); I mean, c'mon, secret agents? Marmalade in space? Then again, if a third film can pull off something like James Bond or Men in Black, I'm all for it! Also, just loved that swear word coming out of left field, and that funeral gag at the end was absolutely so darkly hilarious. Overall, a really good movie and sequel. While it doesn’t quite have that “much darker and emotional” sequel tone of Kung Fu Panda 2, How To Train Your Dragon 2, and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, it is definitely one of DreamWorks’ best sequels. 8/10

Dog Man As a fan of the books, this is a very faithful adaptation. The animation is stellar, and the writing is good. My main complaint is the pacing, which is way, way too fast for human comprehension. Overall, it's a 7/10.

TNG (it's the movie with Liam Neeson you can probably find it on IMDb) was really committed to making a joke every 5 seconds and im here for it 9/10
Dog Man was actually not bad it was a good adaptation of the first few books (Dog Man Unleashed, and A Tale of Two Kitties) 7/10
A Minecraft Movie felt like a massive trailer wasnt very good but was definitely the best theater experience cuz the audience was screaming but also no popcorn throwing me and my friends were screaming louder than we ever screamed before 4/10
cinema.
