Was there a crackdown on remix chains in October 2024?

Two r____ c____s that I was in were deleted by the ST from late October 2024 to November 2024 because they were “spamming projects”. I later Contacted Us twice with the first being why they deleted one of them and the second being how they define a r____ c____. The first’s answer was basically “all r____ c____s are spam and if you’re serious about creative projects, they shouldn’t be called r____ c____s. The second’s answer was basically “a r____ c____ is the same as a spamchain, so we discourage projects that call themselves r____ c____s and projects like ‘let’s get this to XXXX remixes’.” Was there really a crackdown, why were innocent r____ c____s being deleted, and why do they use that definition instead of the common definition of “when the remixes go in long chains on the remix tree”?

Are you talking about Remix Chains?

And why are you censoring “Remix Chains”, I can send forum posts with the term just fine.

Yes I am. I just pretty much have a taboo against saying that and I don’t want others to say it, either, ever since those two chains were deleted.

Also, can you provide proof of this happening(or stuff that happens, which makes you THINK it happened)?

Did the Scratch Team explicitly say this anywhere(in an announcement, forum post, or an alert/email you received)? What did the remix chains contain(and could they be taken down for another reason?)

It seems unlikely the Scratch Team will blanket ban remix chains(unless they're inappropriate or otherwise not okay for Scratch), because it's a common way for Scratchers to exchange ideas(I.e. starting a story with one project, another Scratcher remixing and adding another scene. A Scratcher creating a “whiteboard” project, allowing users to add their own characters/drawings in their remixes).

Considering Scratch's motto is “Imagine, Program, Share”, targeting remix chains could inhibit the “Imagine” and “Share” part.

One such project had this:

“For project (removed):

“Help keep the site friendly” - The Scratch Team has removed this project because it appears that you are creating large numbers of projects with no creative content. Please use Scratch to show your own ideas and creativity, not for spamming projects. Similarly, please do not encourage remix-chain projects. we are a creative and collaborative coding site. If you’re having trouble getting started with projects, we have some resources that might help! If you need inspiration/project ideas, this forum post is a great place to start: https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/topic/54146/. For technical questions about coding and scripts, we find this post helpful: https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/topic/233605/. The discussion forums have many, many additional informative posts, so make sure to explore! Thanks! - Scratch Team”

Of course, this could be because of how many spamchains are named (for example ARCBIB).

Oh…

Can you go over what the remix chain contained(for further context)?

With just this alert, it seems like the Scratch Team could also target other types of projects(Add-yourself, Add-on comics/stories, collabs, blank-slate projects, “do something with these sprites” projects, free vandalism projects, etc)?

I really hope that isn't the case…

Did you edit the alert to make it show “removed”, did the Scratch team remove the title, was the project actually called “Removed”?

No, they’ve only targeted ones with “remix chain” in the title. That one was pretty much a “add anything you want”. The other one was a fictional map chain. To make the chances that they reshare the fictional map one better, I painstakingly renamed every single project I had in that chain to something else.

Also, I just removed the title of the project.

For the “add anything” project, is it just a blank project, for people to remix and add sprites/backdrops, etc?

For the fictional map chain, did it start with a base map, and you had people remix and add different areas/locations/landmarks to the map?

I don't really see why the Scratch team would be against this?

Are you sure it's purely because “remix chain” is in the title?

For the fictional map, people could add landmasses and add countries, as well as make the countries do stuff. We even have projects explaining the countries, and a studio. The chain was deleted at remix 602, but is still continuing. The thing is that over time, changes became less and less noticeable, but clues to what changes were made could be seen in the News section, which can be seen by pressing space. The rules share located in the instructions.

Yeah, I'm stumped.

I highly suggest getting a Scratch Team member's attention, or using Contact Us.

I’ve tried. Also, should I switch the news to the instructions and the rules to the news sprite?

This conversation has headed in an “inappropriate” direction.
Also, let’s get back on topic. Have any of you gotten your remix chains deleted at around that time?

Though this is the forums, so it’s fine to say it. Just don’t put it in the title, instructions, or N&C of a project.

even in those places you are allowed to mention it if it's not what the project is about
