When the Text of Speech extension was first added in a beta version of Scratch 3, it also included a “puppy” voice, which was later removed. I don't know what the ST's reason for adding either of those voices was, but the kitten voice makes sense because the default sprite is a cat.

the kitten voice is actually different in that it is slightly higher-pitched than the squeak voice.
