It's probably also visited less frequently than the profile page, so it doesn't have as much impact on the site's performance.

I don't really know the answer to the question and neither does anyone who isn't on the ST, but small correction: the following tab is sorted by age and followers tab sorted by when they followed you, (from first to last now)

Anyways, I am kind of hoping to get a reply from a Scratch Team member at some point. I know several of them have commented on the change so they do know more than we do in this case, but unfortunately since there still hasn't been a formal announcement on the change all we can gauge about it is what they've said and what we can observe.

Hard to say since profile pages are currently still using the old 2.0 and are currently in desperate need of an eventual update - in other words, we have no idea yet if a new profile page redesign will even include the follower and following list.

But as for now they'll be stuck this way to reduce website lag.
