Make Ads a ›togglable‹ feature
Note: This is not adding ads as its own column or section.
About
Advertising on people's profiles, projects, and studios is not allowed unless the owner says users can advertise.
My idea is to allow the owners of those mediums to disable the posting of ads (links to scratch projects) on that medium. (Excluding the owner)
Places this would apply (mediums):
- Profiles
- Projects
- Studios
What's this actually gonna do?
- Detect if a comment is an advertisement.
• By checking if a comment has a link to a project, is telling users to check out a project, or is just mentioning a project the user created.
• Would probably need a bunch of regex checks
• The owner would be exempt.- If the owner has “block advertisements” on, the ads will be deleted or not posted.
- If the owner has it off, the ads will have an “advertisement” tag on it, letting people easily ignore them.
It will also add:
- A toggle for the owner of a medium to toggle ads
- A short message explaining that ads are not allowed (when the toggle is on)
Isn't this banned?TL;DR: Make a button to toggle ads in the comments.
Short answer: No.
Long Answer:This makes advertising more difficult on profiles where it isn't allowed.
It doesn't:
- Allow ads from other websites
- Allow ads where they aren't allowed
- Override disabled comment sections

You have 1000+ posts so I assume I don't need to explain.
7.8 Project advertisements on the Scratch website
Some users are interested in having advertisements around the website which advertise Scratch projects or studios, even if they are not paid for these advertisements. However, it is unclear how projects would be chosen to be advertised. Also, this would require a Scratch Team member to ensure that inappropriate projects are not chosen to be advertised, and the Scratch Team does not currently have the resources to do this.

I mean, people already advertise their projects in the comments. So, just make those comments into “advertisements” which function the same as normal comments, except they can all be deleted by the project owner. The Show and Tell forum was created for topics about advertising. The Featured Project tool on a profile page can also be used to advertise one project. Other common methods include advertising in forum signatures, studios, or projects.
Advertising on other Scratchers' mediums, however, is known to be controversial and a frequent subject of alerts.

Advertising on other people's profile, projects, or studios is not allowed, unless the owner of that medium allows it. Thus, just make it a toggle to allow the owner to automatically stop advertisements from being commented. It's basically automation.Yes, but it isn't allowed.I mean, people already advertise their projects in the comments. 1. Mine is not just for projects. It's also for profiles and studios.
2. Mine isn't just links. It would also include stuff like “Check out my projects.” or “I made a new project”. (increasing detail on the main post rn)

There should also be a warning advertising is disabled, like this:

erm what the sigma is this quality
This will prevent confusion and overloading support with stuff like “I cant post a link to my project.”

Here's a better mockup:

by the way, this isn't an actual comment by kaj, it is just an inspect elemented comment on my profile that has a link to a forum post. i changed the link to a project.

Dear god, I am begging you from the bottom of my heart please don't add this. Even if it's toggleable it would force more into the fame aspect of Scratch, which is already stated to be a moderately unwanted side effect of the current system by the ST

This idea is great for people who do not like ads, but how practical is your suggestion? I have a few concerns.
1. There are so many ways for people to say ‘check out my project’. A simple link, the words ‘i think you’ll like my project because my projs are awesome' etc.
2. People who dislike ads don't necessarily always have an issue with mentioning projects. That's a bit extreme in my opinion. Imagine someone says ‘hey @user, do you want to collaborate on a project? details here : (link to explanation project)’ or 'hello, you recently applied to my raffle/contest, results here (link)! thanks, user'
3. Many people say ads aren't allowed, however they may appreciate ads. One user follows me on Scratch so I notify them of new posts in case they haven't seen them. They don't mind this and are absolutely okay with it. I'm sure the same applies to various people, including users who do not like ads.
4. Also, some people generally don't want ads but are fine with it if a user is polite like this:
Hello fellow Scratcher! I'm @NoOne, but my name is actually Nella. – I recently posted a new project about (topic) which involved (thing) and (thing). I completely understand that you do not wish advertisements to be posted onto your profile, and I respect that. I do hope that this one advert can be forgiven because I do not advertise on your content and if you do not forgive me, I would like you to know that I am sincerely sorry. – Maybe you want the link tho(Link)
They're more likely to be forgiven. Obviously, people shouldn't take advantage of chill people who are willing to twist their boundaries around, but sometimes it's fine, especially if a user is polite and kind, and not something like:YOU'LL LOVEEE THIS CRAAAZYY PROJECT, WHICH IS A TEN OUTTA TEN FROM MEHHH – SEEE IT NOWW PLEASEEEEEE (linkity link) BYEEEEEEEE MY PROJS ARE SOOOO COOL DONT FORGET TO FOLLOW YARRSSS BYE SLAYY
Which is in capitals, very in-your-face, exceptionally self-promoting, with the promo sort of everywhere, follow-begging in caps and without any kind of ‘please’ or ‘thank you’, and just downright disrespecting User's boundaries. I know that Nella technically did that too, however they acknowledged their mistake.
MASSIVE IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER:: I know that some of you may think I am naming-and-shaming, however, this is posted with no disrespect to anyone named Nella, @SomeOne, @NoOne, or ay other name I may have posted. These are all used for explanatory purposes.
Bye

I don't understand. From what I can tell, you're saying that since it's already a problem, the Scratch Team might as well encourage it.
