AI won't stifle creativity - it empowers (Bring Scratch AI)
Unleashing Creativity: Why Scratch's AI Sprite Generator Holds Immense Promise
As a young programmer with over a year of experience utilizing Scratch, I'm deeply enthused by the proposed integration of an AI sprite generator. Scratch serves as an invaluable platform for aspiring creators, fostering the development of engaging animations and games. However, the creation of intricate sprites can be a time-consuming obstacle, particularly for those new to the platform. This is where AI presents itself as a transformative force, poised to revolutionize the Scratch experience.
Consider the boundless possibilities. You're immersed in the construction of a captivating space exploration game. You envision a formidable alien overlord, but translating this formidable foe into pixels can be a laborious process. With an AI sprite generator, a simple description of this villain – tentacles, glowing eyes, and the like – would suffice. In mere seconds, the AI would generate a sprite prepared to dominate your virtual universe. Tools like DALL-E 3 and Character.AI have already demonstrated the remarkable potential of AI in the creative domain. These platforms allow users to conjure visual representations of anything they can imagine – a skateboarding unicorn, a robotic chef flipping pancakes – with remarkable speed. This not only sparks creativity but also liberates valuable time for young programmers to channel their efforts towards the core aspects of their projects: crafting compelling narratives, designing addictive gameplay mechanics, or perfecting animation techniques.
There's an erroneous perception surrounding AI image generators, portraying them as “evil” instruments used by “art thieves.” It's crucial to understand that AI lacks malicious intent. It's essentially a powerful processing tool that facilitates the visualization of ideas. Think of it as a highly advanced paintbrush that assists you in bringing your concepts to life. Imagine the possibilities for Scratch projects if users could simply describe a shimmering mermaid or a hulking cyborg, and the AI instantly generates the corresponding sprite. This would be a paradigm shift, empowering young creators to concentrate on what truly matters – expressing their unique visions and building exceptional projects. And anyway, AI will never take a job away - instead, bringing a faster process and letting humans fix the mistakes.
However, the potential of AI in Scratch extends beyond just sprite generation. Stuck on a complex logic puzzle that has you stumped? Perhaps an AI could analyze the problem and suggest relevant code snippets to help you get back on track. Similarly, consider the time saved if AI could generate sound effects or even background music for your projects. With AI as your collaborator, you wouldn't have to spend hours meticulously crafting sounds or struggling to compose a catchy tune. Instead, your energy would be channeled towards developing unique ideas and constructing innovative projects that showcase your creativity.
Scratch's core mission revolves around empowering young people to express themselves through creation. The integration of AI tools like a sprite generator wouldn't stifle creativity; instead, it would act as a catalyst, propelling young programmers to soar to even greater heights. This potential advancement aligns perfectly with Scratch's vision, and its implementation would be a transformative boon for countless young creators, myself included. In a world brimming with possibilities, AI tools can become powerful allies, helping us transform our most audacious creative ideas into reality.
TL;DR: AI can help instead of upset. Give it a chance. Many platforms are using AI now, so give it a try!

This seems like it was written by AI.
Nevermind, I just ran it through an ai detector and it said it was human. Props to OP for writing such a detailed post.

I'm not reading all of that since I have a low attention span, but assuming what I think you're trying to say, I can tell you that Scratch said they're not adding AI Image generating to their platform.

AI art stinks. I don't care if it's added or not, because nobody who depends on it is going anywhere.

Okay. But making it between “us” and “you” is kind of weird to me. My identity does not rest on the fact that I don't like AI. I just don't. Hey, I get where you're coming from. The whole ‘us vs. you’ thing can be a bit much, right? And yeah, it's totally cool if AI isn't your thing or if you don't really think about it much. But here's a thought - AI is kinda sneaking into our lives in all sorts of ways, even when we don't notice it. Like, it's in our phones, our streaming services, even in some of the ads we see. Maybe instead of picking sides, we could just chat about how all this tech stuff is changing things up. No pressure to be all gung-ho about AI or anything. It's more like, ‘Hey, this is happening, what do you think about it?’ I'm curious - have you ever had a moment where you realized AI was part of something you use? Or is it really just not on your radar at all?Okay. But making it between “us” and “you” is kind of weird to me. My identity does not rest on the fact that I don't like AI. I just don't. Strong support. I rely heavily on AI to be creative, give me ideas when I'm in a pickle, and even help me improve my content! It would be very beneficial to have Scratch AI, in my eyes, and most certainly in many others. I've seen plenty of young kids who use AI to help them with many creative outputs.

Ai is already destroying the animation economy, animators are rioting at Hollywood, when it takes over manual jobs, everyone will just be farming on open fields at 102° Fahrenheit, probably not even going to school.
My Multi-Fandom M.A.P got rehosted: https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/1059809350
The deadline was July 30th, there is only one finished part, I am not a popular Scratcher so please join the rehost
for extra information, this M.A.P was for @OrionOdyssey 's 1.3k animation contest: https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/1040215751 , there are only 16 parts, so each person would've still got a good amount of the prize, as seen on the Sonic 2 box art “Don't just sit there and waste your precious time, when you want to do something, do it when you can, it's the only way to live a life without regrets” but now it's too late…

So can the creation of the scripts for the project - in fact, scripts are a lot harder to make than sprites, as for many types of projects such as platformers simple shapes like squares, circles, and rectangles will work pefectly, and Scratch has a sprite library for the few things in a typical New Scratcher project that can't be simple shapes. The problem is that they are both However, the creation of intricate sprites can be a time-consuming obstacle, particularly for those new to the platform. fundamental parts of Scratch.
This is Scratch. You can make a simple vector in a few minutes that matches the description of “tentacles, glowing eyes, and the like” using circles and the reshape tool. The Scratch editor is very versatile already. While AI generating will be quicker, it may not exactly match what the creator of the project envisioned - for instance, someone could want a human shaped or jellyfish shaped alien overlord, but the AI might keep giving them squid shaped overlords. Also keep in mind that this is Scratch we are talking about - people will not expect your drawing to be good, but they will riot if it is “generic”, and AI images are the same level of generic as those mass-produced platformers.
Odd to bring this up when the bitmap AI images would probably be a nightmare to animate with, unless the animation in question is as simple as some go to and glide to blocks. or perfecting animation techniques.
The Scratch costume library already exists and provides a mermaid sprite, and it wouldn't be hard to make a cyborg based off of the sprites there. And I'd rather have all the Scratch projects be those made like that than all of them be made of AI-generated images because at least those have some human thought going into them. Imagine the possibilities for Scratch projects if users could simply describe a shimmering mermaid or a hulking cyborg, and the AI instantly generates the corresponding sprite.
<< EXTREMELY LOUD INCORRECT BUZZER >> And anyway, AI will never take a job away
The entire reason that this post has been promoting AI images so far is because the AI images will mean there is no need for the task of drawing sprites - that is, AI will automate the artists' jobs. In Scratch this is lame but not enough of a problem to cause major societal upheaval, but in the real world “bringing a faster process and letting humans fix the mistakes” leads to unemployment.

Is this implying that people should use AI as a replacement for making their own work even when they have the required skills? Sorry man bad analogyYeah. But would you rather save time to get to school on time, or miss the school bus, and be late? Bad idea, it will definitely make lots of artists and programmers upset.
Including an AI image generator in Scratch wouldn't add anything new to the many existing image generators, so unless Scratch plans to include more, I don't see any point in adding this
This is an entirely valid criticism of AI - the models we know today have been trained on a lot of artists' work without consent, and restarting training with openly licensed content would be pointless for these companies There's an erroneous perception surrounding AI image generators, portraying them as “evil” instruments used by “art thieves.”
