Apple's World Wide Developers Conference 2013

Every year in the late spring, the Silicon Valley giants come to release their new products for the year ahead and hold workshops for developers. In mid May, Google held its annual IO conference, showing off Android and Chrome. This coming Monday, Apple prepares to hold its annual World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC).
Unless you are actually at the event, the developer workshops don't mean much to you. What likely does interest you, however, is the opening keynote. The opening keynote is when the company's CEO and other lead officers address the world to pat themselves on the back for their acheivements so far, while also showing the world what new tricks are up their sleeve.
For your viewing options, there are many. Unless you've shelled out a few thousand dollars, and were lucky enough to buy tickets in the few minutes that they were actually available, going live isn't an option. The best option is to find a live blog from one of many tech sites. My personal favorite is Engadget, however I also frequent Gizmodo and CNet. A few hours after the event, Apple will release a video of the event (probably to save some stress on their servers by giving enough time for them to sell out of their new products before people start streaming).
The upcoming rumors include:
A new “flat” iOS7 reveal (although it will only be available to registered developers until the fall iPhone announcement)
OSX 10.9 (Snoop Lion?)
New Haswell-ready Mac hardware
More devices with “retina” displays
Discuss the rumors, what you'd like to see, what you don't want to see… You know, just discuss the upcoming WWDC!

I'm gonna try my best not to be a MS Troll, but the new iOS seems like it will be a lot like a very similar Windows Phone 8.

I don't think we'll see such a blatant imitation. Microsoft doesn't own “flat” any more than Apple owns “rounded corners.” (Oh wait, our patent system for some reason allows them to own rounded corners. Bad example.) But a refresh of iOS is clearly necessary. They tout iOS as being “the world's most advanced mobile OS” but it's behind WP8 and stock Android on appearance (although the manufacturer skins are horrid), behind Android in functionality, and behind BB10 in platform security. The only thing that really is positive is that there is a LOT of software for it and all of the iPhones look good and perform well. (the same can not be said for Android or WP8 fragmentation. Most Windows Phones have a laughable thick, brightly colored plastic shell. Also they range from high to low end, meaning apps may work on one device but not the next.) If Apple wants to make claims like that, they should at least lead in one category.

As iOS is the only one of these that I personally have access to, I greatly look forward to an updated appearance. Maybe some more freedom would be nice, too.

Note: my ranking methodology is a breakdown of opinion. Android is infinitely customizable, so if you end up with a bad looking interface it's your fault. This gives it an advantage over WP8, but at least WP8 is interesting and interactive, not just rows of static icons that hasn't changed in five years.
This customizability in Android is what makes it superior to the competition in functionality. iOS is hardly customizable unless using jailbreaking methods which Apple specifically fights against, and being forced into the App Store ecosystem means that Apple puts large restrictions on their developers. WP8 and BB10 simply have a lack of applications compared to Google Play or the App Store.
BB10 is just simply designed for security and always has been. iOS has decent security, far better than Android, but certainly not as good as BlackBerry's built-in tools.
As for the physical phones, Android manufacturers are only now beginning to match Apple's design sense. The HTC One is beautiful (although the UI overlay is nearly as painful as Samsung's) along with Google's flagship Nexus 4. The GSIV might be the current powerhouse, but I've never been a fan of their external design. However, with the exception of the N4, all of them are high-end and expensive phones. Not to say that the N4 is low quality, but its price comes in at half that of the One or GSIV. Also, most Windows Phones just look like a child's toy. Some high-end ones might look better, but they're rare enough that you don't see as much about them. BB10 has some nice hardware, but not as good as the others.

Just my two cents. I'd rather have something that does a few things really well than one that does everything just acceptable.

In 2018, I asked the Scratch Team to remove all my forum posts to protect my privacy. That's why this post is blank. Besides, I've outgrown this website, and I don't want the dumb things I said in my late tween/early teen years to follow me around for the rest of my life. This post probably wasn't anything interesting or important, anyway.

for all intents and purposes, the ios system has been pretty much the same for almost six years (and that's like a million internet years)
design fashions change fast
also if you read 16skittles' post above you, you'd realise that ios is pretty much jack of all trades, master of none

Well that's natural. Only recently have mobile ARM processors started getting faster than old intel processors.

That means you don't have to relearn anything.
Also, I think flat design looks bland and ugly.
This concept of “learning” how a system works… Is that even relevant anymore? It's not like we're typing commands into a terminal for the first time, here. The original iPhone, I'll say, was quite ugly. It was an idea that got better over time, as the iPhone 4 design update is still in my opinion the best looking phone on the market. iOS needs to go through a similar progression. iOS 1 needed to be something that someone who has never used a touchscreen device before could easily navigate it. This isn't 2007. Android has seen nearly a BILLION device activations. That is 1/7 of the world. If you look at places like North America or Europe, which represent the largest markets for these devices, I'm sure the percentage of people who have experience with touchscreen devices well surpasses 75%.
Apple has a choice. Apple can either continue making a “tricycle” that people use as their first phone to see how it works, losing much of their market share to Android in the process looking for actual customization and advanced features (in CyanogenMod there are even options to overclock and underclock the CPU for battery life or performance. Such options are unnecessary for many, but having OPTIONS means that advanced users can get the best experience while beginners don't need to learn the challenges), or they can adapt with the times and create something that can genuinely compete with Android.
Heck. If Apple would just stop plugging the holes and let Evasi0n continue to work, and permit Jailbreaking within the EULA, I'd be happy. It's the best of both worlds: only those who are capable and want those options will ever see those options, while those who want a “walled garden” can stay there if they so wish.

And if Apple just allowed for some fraction of customization such as a user-customizable skin (think of a Minecraft texture pack) that replaces the default, the entire “flat vs. skeumorphic”debate would be irrelevant as users could make the OS look however they like. Which honestly is how it should be.

Edit: if you're not convinced on “flat” design, I don't know how well it will fit the description. Look at this image of the past three WWDC apps. the first one is just unattractive. The random blue on the top makes no sense to the design, and the black bottom contrasts too much with the rest of the UI. The middle one is a step in the right direction, but it still doesn't understand what it wants to be. The gradients are really intense, and the selection at the bottom could be a little more subtle than it is. The last one is more coherent. It's crisp and looks light. Transitions are subtle and restrained. I personally feel that it makes for a more attractive design, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I'm just no longer convinced that color and complexity are needed for an attractive design.

http://gizmodo.com/apple-ios-7-everything-you-need-to-know-updating-live-512269828 This video is cool.
I will not lie. Even as a Windows person, I must admit that the new iOS 7 looks very cool. I like the concept of Command Center, but what I saw from it, the font it too thin and there is not enough contrast, making it hard to see. And the “parallax” concept seems cool but looks like a great way to drain a battery.
Apple has done something good with the translucency and inactive app elements shrinking when not in use. I like that. However, they have crossed the line where too much white is too much, I would love to see them create a “dark” theme that you can choose from.
I am still confused about why they still only have a static launcher, I mean really? Android has had it for years, and it's amazing. And besides a few changes to the system, iOS 7 is really just a graphical update to make it look like something big has actually changed.

Well it just finished.
I dislike their terminology of “entirely new” MacBook Airs when they didn't unveil any exterior alterations. The update definitely appears to be worthwhile, though. If you're considering a 2012 MBA, don't. The one from today is cheaper and far improved.
I generally dislike OSX, but maybe Mavericks is enough to change that. I'm not fond of the name but the featureset looks pretty good, actually.
The iOS update is going to be interesting to see. It looks way different and has many good features. Luckily it still supports iPad 2.
The Mac Pro design just doesn't really look “Apple” enough IMO. I'd have rather seen a black aluminum case (like the iPhone 5's aluminum) than the either plastic or glass that was actually used. But I'm not in the market for a Mac Pro anyway, and those who are were so desperate for an update that they would pay for it if it just had a cardboard box for a case. But assembled in the USA!

Overall the conference was pretty compelling. Also I liked how after the iOS 7 video with Jony Ive someone from the crowd just shouted “I love you” to Tim Cook.

iOS 7 is so amazing I cried.

Probably never going to need to jailbreak again except for emulators.
