(Submission to this forum. Is this good? I can change things of course!)
“What Collabs Have You Seen Succeed?”:
It’s hard to say what projects I’ve seen truly “succeed”. I think for Scratchers, success comes in stepping stones. Some projects succeed in being put on paper, but can’t be translated into something digital we all can see. And some projects succeed in getting enough collaborators for a project, but fail to hold everyone’s interests long enough to see through to a finished project. I think it’s easier for me to point out instead, what projects I think are healthy and stable in their development. Notably, that would be the game “Cloudstorm Cooking”, with the catchy and upbeat motto, “Why let monsters eat you when you can just eat them? “. This game has been in development for awhile and the forum for the project remains up-to-date in terms of their artistic advancements in-game. Unfortunately, it appears that the most common jobs are already taken, but it’s still a kind act to offer your support in any way you can, including offering to be a game tester for any alpha or beta versions of the game! (https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/topic/682557/)
“What Collabs Are Worth Trying To Do?”:
There are countless collabs currently out right now that could appear promising to the subjective mind. That is, until you join them and they collapse into a mess of old forum cobwebs and false guarantees
. To avoid this, it’s best to look for projects that have been going on for some period of time, preferably anything older than a week that’s still being updated is a good sign that the collaborators are still active.
Here are some notable projects I think could use some help:
–Dawn of All Life (DoAL) is an “open-world, city building game”. You play as a caveman rebuilding his village and defending it from raids!
https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/topic/686416/
-Below the Surface is a Subnautica inspired pixel-art survival game where you collect resources and craft items to repair your submarine and escape to the surface!
https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/topic/668625/
-Star Wars: The Adventures of Like Skywalker is a self-explanatory game based off of Star Wars! If you're a big fan of Star Wars media, try to offer some help!
https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/topic/689404/
-Space Explorers: Empire (SPEE) is an “ambitious collaboration aiming to make an amazing science-fiction game”. This game has aspects of ship building, ship flight, and planet exploration. If you'd like to help out with this, please, volunteer using the link!
https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/topic/651893/
-LongFun Games is a growing community of game makers who are willing to make just about anything! From what I can see, there is a bit of trouble with various members being taken away by the wrath of summer (curse those water theme parks), but they’re currently brainstorming a golf game, so if you’re interested in golf, I suggest you ask and see how you can help! https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/topic/662438/
And some honorable mentions. If there’s any attest to the dedication of one Scratcher, it might be this user. They’ve found countless creative ways to continue to bump their projects, so I really hope someone joins and helps them out one of these days! :P
-Animators UNITE is a giant Scratch animation collab inspired by Super Scratch Smash, that’s actively looking for any level of animator to join in on the fun! Check it out here! (https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/topic/678724/)
-Scratch Saga is an ambitious project looking for animators to join so together one of “Scratch’s Best Anime Series” can be created! If you’re an animator, go join it!
“What Collabs Aren’t Worth Trying To Do?”:
There’s no harm in “trying out a collab” necessarily, so when I say that certain genres of collabs aren’t even worth checking out it’s really just my opinion tied into what I’ve experienced on Scratch. I judge the projects I put in my listings based off their niche, and if they’ll really help you to network with another person and make a good friend or friends.
Nevertheless, I think Operating System or (OS) collabs are something you don’t have to worry about missing out on. While I find it impressive when Scratchers create their own operating system inside of Scratch, there’s really not much to it besides that. I think in terms of popularity, no one’s really going to find it impressive that you collabed on this project, in comparison to something more unique like the before-mentioned projects, though it wouldn’t hurt to try.
I also don’t find “ScratchCoins” or any sort of Scratch currency sensible. As in my own opinion I see little point to these systems, since Scratch doesn’t want to make money off of children unlike Roblox. Scratch is a place where children’s imaginations should be allowed to run wild with coding projects, not a place where you’re grinding on some sort of “daily task” system so you can flaunt your “ScratchTokens”.
