I think it would be better if it was
A big fat, sleeping cat on the featured projects section(so that it wouldn't block any project from view), if you wake it up by pressing it, it will start speaking in “Meow”, which I think is a prank all can agree with.

I think this will be pretty easy to implement as a sleeping version of scratch cat already exists and all they have to do is add it to the “Featured” section

From other posts in the thread, I've concluded that it's best to add another row just to fit in the cat. So, unless scrolling the page is a particularly challenging task for users, it won't obscure front-paged projects.

Unrelated : might also change the cat's position to lying on its side, as I bet doing so on the back would be particularly uncomfy.

It's not going to be related to Scratch Cat in any way, I just thought that having a humongous cat on the page would've been funny.
Also read Paddle2See's comment, you can't just remove the front paged projects for April Fools, people could take it personally and it would still be noticeable, since the row would just be moved a bit down where all thumbnails could still be seen, even if partially.

The extra space would still be applicable. Also, isn't Scratch Cat the mascot of scratch and it's one of the first things scratchers think of when hearing the word “cat”. It would be great if he could decide to “take a break” (not by travelling around the world, just to take a rest)
