There's a new change coming to Minecraft.

First, Mojang has officially confirmed that they will not be doing major updates for the forseeable future.
The game drops system will now be the way Minecraft updates, and major updates will not be coming (if ever) for quite a while.

That's not fully what I wanted to say, that was part of the explanation for the thing that's changing.

There's a new version numbering system for Minecraft.

That's right. The version numbers have been going up the way they have always been for years, from when 1.0 updated to 1.1, 1.16.4 into 1.16.5, and 1.20.6 into 1.21. But that is going to change. You might have realized that with the old system, the main update number goes up with every major update, with hotfixes and minor updates changing the secondary number. Of course, there is also some inconsistency for how version numbers work for Java and Bedrock, because bedrock gets a lot more hotfixes and things.

But something changed… When the game drops system came, the number for 1.21.x kept going up, from 1.21.6 to 1.21.7, all the way up to 1.21.10 (or 1.21.120 for bedrock). The main version number didn't change, while the secondary number kept going up and up. Well, the reason they aren't changing the major update number is because, again, there are NO major updates planned for Minecraft in the forseeable future, and changing the version number to 1.22 would make people think there was a major update when they weren't doing it.

But, as you all may know, with the new game drops system, the version numbers have been starting to get confusing and forgettable, (especially on bedrock) and added with the inconsistencies between Java and Bedrock's version numbers, it starts becoming a cumbersome ordeal, so now the new version numbers are changing to fix that.

Here is how the new numbering system works:

First, the "1" at the beginning of every version number (1.16.5, 1.20) will no longer be on the version number.

How will the primary number for updates work then?
The first version number in an update (XX.0) will be based on the current year.
So, the next year will be 2026, so the version numbers for that year would be 26.X.

How will the secondary number for updates work?
The secondary number for updates will be based on the number of updates the game has in the year and the number of hotfixes in a game drop.
For example, the first game drop of 2026 would be 26.1, and in Java, a hotfix in 26.1 would be 26.1.1, and in bedrock it would be 26.11 (the hotfix number is added to the major update number in bedrock, and is separated by a dot in java)

The new version numbering system will be used for every update in 2026 and onward.

(Don't worry, past updates will keep their old version numbers. Updates and game drops for the current year and previous updates before that will not be affected by the new version numbering system, and will keep their old version numbers.)

having double the downloads of minecraft is crazy, at least you dont have to pay microsoft money
but yeah, this does seem like a “minecraft at home” situation, seeing as it has more downloads, and probably more popularity. definitely not legal, either.

I've actually watched a video discussing it. Basically, it's one of a whole lot of bedrock edition ports that have varying degrees of ads (some let you watch an ad to not have ads for a 20-30 minute session), links to a bunch of servers, and they tend to have a lot of stolen Marketplace maps pre-downloaded in the worlds section. They literally just put a texture pack on it and reposted it. It's so copy-pasted that you can even play on bedrock servers with it.

i found a minecraft-inspired programming game (craft.buzzcoder.com) that uses a unique texture pack. I'm not sure what pack it is, so here are some images from its assets

…and nobody decided to do anything about it? I'm surprised microsoft didn't decide to just destroy whoever made it in a lawsuit and win a lot of money or smth tbh

Note that those aren't coming in Mounts of Mayhem, they were shown in the 26.0 beta, meaning that they'll either be in the first game drop of the year or a hotfix update.
